Three stations and the Transport Museum

      ⏱ 4 h 30 min🚶 1.6 km🍽 1📍 5 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

The Three Stations Square from the inside: the palatial Komsomolskaya, the renovated Leningradsky and Shchusev’s Kazansky Station, lunch in a food mall and the new Transport Museum with a horse tram, metro cars and simulators.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture✨ New places☔️ If it rains
      👶 3–6, 7–12, 13+ years · ✗ hard with a stroller

Through the stations and passages there are security gates and stairs; with a stroller it’s easier to start at Leningradsky Station and walk along the street straight to Kazansky.

🏛 Komsomolskaya metro station (Circle line)
A 1952 metro station with Baroque-style vaults, chandeliers and mosaics on the ceiling.
Exit at the circle-line Komsomolskaya and walk to the end of the central hall: Korin’s mosaics on the ceiling are best seen from the middle of the nave.

        • The station was built to a design by Alexey Shchusev; in 1952 he was posthumously awarded the Stalin Prize for it, together with the artist Pavel Korin.
        • The central nave, 11 m wide and 9 m high, is the largest of any column station in the Moscow metro.
        • Korin's eight ceiling mosaics show Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Minin and Pozharsky, Suvorov, Kutuzov and soldiers at the Reichstag.
        • Korin himself redid the two panels with Stalin in 1963: they now show Lenin before the Red Guards and the Motherland statue by the Spasskaya Tower.
        • In 2021 the transport department named Komsomolskaya the busiest metro station, with 29.1 million passengers a year.
        • In 1991–1992 it was proposed to rename the station Kalanchevskaya or Three Stations.

        🏛 Leningradsky Railway Station
        Комсомольская пл., 3
Moscow's oldest station, opened in 1851 and the twin of Moskovsky Station in St Petersburg.
From the metro there’s a direct passage into the station, so you don’t need to go outside. Take a look at the new canopy over the platforms: the building is entered through security gates, no ticket needed.

        • The station was built in 1844–1851 to a design by Konstantin Thon; construction was supervised by the architect Rudolf Zhelyazevich.
        • Nicholas I himself approved Thon's design for both terminals, in Moscow and in St Petersburg.
        • The first train arrived here on 3 August 1851, and on 19 August Nicholas I travelled the new line for the first time with his family.
        • In its history the station has had four names: Petersburgsky, from 1855 Nikolaevsky, in 1923 Oktyabrsky and from 1924 Leningradsky.
        • On 11 March 1918 Lenin arrived here from Petrograd as the Soviet government moved to Moscow.
        • Thon refused the demand of the Minister of Railways Pyotr Kleinmichel to lay the bricks with thin joints, fearing for the strength of the walls.
        • The latest reconstruction ran from August 2024 to May 2026: a train shed over the platforms and a direct passage to Komsomolskaya station appeared.

        🏛 Kazansky Station
        Комсомольская пл., 2
Shchusev's station with a tower modeled on Kazan's Syuyumbike, built from 1913 to 1940.
Through the underpass beneath Komsomolskaya Square to Kazansky. In the waiting halls look up: the vaults, chandeliers and Shchusev’s tower are visible both from inside and from the platform.

        • Until 1912 the station was called Ryazansky; it was renamed when the line reached Kazan.
        • The first train, to Kolomna, left Ryazansky Station on 20 July 1862.
        • Shchusev won the competition for the "gateway to the East" against Fyodor Shekhtel, the author of the neighboring Yaroslavsky Station.
        • Roerich, Benois, Kustodiev, Lanceray and Serebriakova took part in the interior design.
        • The restaurant is styled as a Moscow Baroque refectory with Lanceray's murals; Ilf and Petrov described it in "The Twelve Chairs".
        • Shchusev drew the bronze zodiac signs for the tower clock himself; the clock was started only in 1923.
        • The reconstruction after Shchusev's drawings, with the new Tsar's Tower, was finished in 1997, for Moscow's 850th anniversary.

🍜 Depo Tri Vokzala food hall

        ▮▮▯▯▯
Lunch: about 8 minutes from Kazansky along Novoryazanskaya. There are many food counters and everyone picks their own — kids usually do fine with pizza or noodles.
🍴 A large food hall in old brick buildings on Novoryazanskaya, five minutes from Kazansky Station: dozens of corners with world cuisines under one roof. What to order: plov, Korean or Greek street food — the corners change, so it is easier to walk the rows and choose on the spot.
        📖 More about the placeCollapse
        • The food hall opened in December 2022.
        • The food hall took over historic brick buildings from the early 20th century on Novoryazanskaya Street.
        • Next door, in Melnikov's garage, the Moscow Transport Museum opened in 2026.
        • Besides the food court, there are fairs, festivals and concerts here.

        🎟 ticket
Opened in September 2026 in the restored Melnikov Garage on Novoryazanskaya (Shukhov may have been involved in the design of the metal trusses): an 1872 horse tram, metro cars, buses and trolleybuses, 27 simulators.
Two minutes from the food mall. Set aside at least two hours: the 1872 horse tram, metro cars, buses and 27 simulators. Closed Monday, ticket offices close 2 hours before closing.

        • The garage on Novoryazanskaya is Konstantin Melnikov's second garage, on which he began work in 1926.
        • The horseshoe shape was dictated by the triangular plot, not just by the architect's concept.
        • The 54 roof trusses rest only on the outer walls, so there is not a single support inside the hall.
        • Before the museum, a taxi depot, a car repair plant and a bus depot worked here, until 2015.
        • Exhibits include a metro car from Berlin and the MatrEshka driverless bus.
        • The museum traces its history to the Retro Car Museum on Rogozhsky Val, opened in 2003.
