Vyborg: the castle, old town and Monrepos

      ⏱ 11 h🚶 7 km + 🚆🚌🍽 2📍 7 stops
      🚶 Moderate — 3–7 km

By Lastochka train in just over an hour to medieval Vyborg: the castle with St Olaf's Tower, old-town lanes, lunch at a tavern and the autumn Monrepos park on rocks above the bay.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture🌳 Parks and nature🚆 Out of town
      👶 7–12, 13+ years · ✓ stroller-friendly

The Lastochka is low-floor, but the platforms are high. The old town is cobbled; you can climb St Olaf's Tower by a glass lift; Monrepos has gravel paths, but roots and rocks lead to the cliffs and Ludwigstein.

        • The square appeared in the late 19th century on the site of the Horned Fortress fortifications, razed under a plan of 1861.
        • The Round Tower was built in 1547–1550 — one of the two surviving defensive towers of the medieval Vyborg fortress.
        • In 1609 the Treaty of Vyborg on Swedish aid to Tsar Vasily Shuisky was signed in the Round Tower.
        • Since 1976 the Round Tower has housed a restaurant with murals on themes from Vyborg's history.
        • The Covered Market was built in 1904–1905 to a design by Karl Hård af Segerstad and was considered the largest in Scandinavia in the early 20th century.
        • From 1912 to 1957 the Vyborg tram ran through the square.

        • The Swedes founded the castle in 1293 on the orders of regent Torgils Knutsson, during the Third Crusade against the Karelian lands.
        • The tower is named after the Norwegian king Olaf the Holy, who christened Scandinavia; it was long considered the tallest keep in Scandinavia.
        • In 1564 St Olaf's Tower was raised to seven storeys: the top became octagonal, with cannon embrasures in three-metre walls.
        • The castle stayed impregnable for over 400 years — it fell only in June 1710 to Peter the Great's troops after a two-month siege.
        • In 1856 the tower burned to the ground: festive illuminations in its dome marked the opening of the Saimaa Canal.
        • In the 19th century the castle housed the provincial prison — the Decembrists Mikhail Lunin, Ivan Annenkov and others were held here.
        • The castle museum opened in 1970, and in 2018 archaeologists found a 16th-century brick scored for a board game.

🏛 Clock Tower and the Old Cathedral
        Выборг, Крепостная ул., 5Б
A tall clock tower among the cobbled lanes of the old town — the former bell tower of the cathedral and one of Vyborg's landmark verticals.
The Clock Tower is the former bell tower of the cathedral; nearby are the ruins of the 13th–15th-century Old Cathedral. Walk along Krepostnaya Street and Storozhevoy Bashni Street — the most medieval blocks

        • The lower tier of the tower is built of boulders, no later than the first half of the 16th century; the walls at the base are 1.6 m thick and stand directly on granite bedrock.
        • The first clock on the bell tower was installed in 1660, and the current mechanism was fitted in 1848 and still works.
        • After the fire of 1793, to a design by Johann Brockman, the tower was extended with a Neoclassical tier and turned into a 35-metre fire watchtower.
        • The alarm bell given to the city by Catherine II still hangs on the tower.
        • The tower appears in the film Sannikov Land: the adventurer Krestovsky climbs it blindfolded.
        • The cathedral was consecrated in 1418 in the name of the Virgin Mary and St Olaf; it was later Lutheran, Orthodox and Lutheran again.
        • The cathedral was finally destroyed in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939 — only its walls have remained since.

        • The fortifications were nicknamed the "Crown of St Anne" — for their crown shape and in honour of Empress Anna Ioannovna.
        • Construction began to a design by General Coulon under Minich; the moat and the first two bastions were ready by 1733.
        • In the early 1750s Abram Gannibal — Pushkin's great-grandfather — worked on the construction.
        • The fortress never saw battle, and in 1864–1865 a road cut it in two — today's Ostrovnaya Street.
        • The stone escarp wall of granite boulders is 10 m high and 3 m thick, and the whole fortress stretches about a kilometre.
        • In April 1918, more than 400 Russian-speaking residents of Vyborg were shot in the fortification moats; a stele commemorates them.

        • Monrepos is the only rocky landscape park in Russia; its name means "my repose" in French.
        • Vyborg's commandant Pyotr Stupishin began laying out a dacha here around 1770, and Prince of Württemberg gave it the name "Monrepos" in the 1780s.
        • From 1788 the estate was owned by Ludwig Heinrich Nicolay, president of the Academy of Sciences — his family kept the park until 1944.
        • The manor house, designed by Giuseppe Antonio Martinelli, is a timber log building clad in boards, in the Palladian spirit.
        • The statue of Väinämöinen playing the kantele was put up in 1831; after vandals damaged it in 1873 it was replaced with a zinc one by Johannes Takanen.
        • Ludwigstein Island became the Nicolay family necropolis in the 1820s and was closed to visitors — hence its second name, "Island of the Dead".
        • Mikhail Glinka and Osip Mandelstam visited the park, and Alexander II came in 1863.
