        • According to tradition, the monastery was founded in memory of Alexander Nevsky's victory over the Swedes in the Battle of the Neva in 1240.
        • The monastery is first mentioned in the cadastral books of 1496 — and already as "old".
        • In the Time of Troubles in 1611, monks of Valaam fled here and brought the relics of the Valaam Monastery's founders, Sergius and Herman.
        • The tented bell tower was built in 1692 by craftsmen from Tikhvin.
        • The Peredvizhnik painter Vasily Maksimov studied at the monastery school — and ran away from here to Petersburg.
        • After the monastery closed in 1927, the monks lived here for another ten years as a fishing cooperative; the monastery was revived in 2002.
        • In 1723, 2,000 linden trees were planted here; two lindens from that time still grow in the courtyard.

        • According to the chronicles, Rurik built a wooden fortress in 862 where the Ladozhka meets the Volkhov; archaeology broadly confirms this date.
        • At the turn of the 9th–10th centuries a stone fortress without lime mortar was built here.
        • In 997 the fortress was taken and destroyed after a siege by the Norwegian jarl Eirik.
        • In 1164 the fortress held out against the Swedes, who arrived in 55 ships.
        • In 1610 Ladoga was held for five months by a detachment of French mercenaries under Pierre Delaville in Swedish service.
        • The Church of St George inside the fortress is one of the oldest churches in Russia, with an area of only 72 m².
        • The museum in the fortress opened in 1971, and in 1984 a museum-reserve was created on its basis.

        • The monument to Rurik and Oleg by Oleg Shorov opened in 2015; it was chosen from 38 competition entries.
        • In the sculpture, Oleg is a warrior with a sword and shield, while Rurik is portrayed as a civilian.
        • Excavations on Varyazhskaya Street found shards of Middle Eastern lustre pottery from Mesopotamia in layers from the early 10th century.
        • In the same place archaeologists found a 10th-century birch-bark scroll with a drawing of a boat.
        • The falcon on Staraya Ladoga's coat of arms recalls both a bronze plaque with a bird found in the excavations and the trident of the Rurikids.

        • The Dormition Cathedral was built around 1154–1159 and is considered the northernmost church of pre-Mongol Rus.
        • From 1718 to 1725 Peter the Great's first wife, Evdokia Lopukhina, lived here in confinement.
        • From 1754 until her death, Evdokia, the first wife of Abram Gannibal, lived at the convent.
        • Restorers pieced together about 13,000 fragments of 12th-century frescoes — nearly 35 m² of painting.
        • Deep arcosolia niches in the cathedral walls were meant for burials, which is why historians consider it a princely burial church.
        • At the turn of the 20th century more than 200 people lived at the convent; its revival began in 2005.

        • The mound "Oleg's Grave", about 10 metres high, is the most monumental of the Ladoga mounds.
        • In 1820 Zorian Dołęga-Chodakowski partly excavated it and found burnt bones and a spearhead from the 8th – early 9th century.
        • The Novgorod chronicle says Oleg died from a snakebite and "his grave is in Ladoga", while the Primary Chronicle places the grave in Kyiv.
        • According to archaeologists, the name "Oleg's Grave" stuck to this mound only in the 1920s–1940s — the mound itself is older than Oleg.
