🏛 St Nicholas Monastery

Старая Ладога, Никольская ул.

A monastery ensemble with a 17th-century St Nicholas Cathedral behind white walls right by the river.

According to tradition, the monastery was founded in memory of Alexander Nevsky's victory over the Swedes in the Battle of the Neva in 1240.
The monastery is first mentioned in the cadastral books of 1496 — and already as "old".
In the Time of Troubles in 1611, monks of Valaam fled here and brought the relics of the Valaam Monastery's founders, Sergius and Herman.
The tented bell tower was built in 1692 by craftsmen from Tikhvin.
The Peredvizhnik painter Vasily Maksimov studied at the monastery school — and ran away from here to Petersburg.
After the monastery closed in 1927, the monks lived here for another ten years as a fishing cooperative; the monastery was revived in 2002.
In 1723, 2,000 linden trees were planted here; two lindens from that time still grow in the courtyard.
