A stone fortress with towers on the headland where the Ladozhka river flows into the Volkhov.

According to the chronicles, Rurik built a wooden fortress in 862 where the Ladozhka meets the Volkhov; archaeology broadly confirms this date.
At the turn of the 9th–10th centuries a stone fortress without lime mortar was built here.
In 997 the fortress was taken and destroyed after a siege by the Norwegian jarl Eirik.
In 1164 the fortress held out against the Swedes, who arrived in 55 ships.
In 1610 Ladoga was held for five months by a detachment of French mercenaries under Pierre Delaville in Swedish service.
The Church of St George inside the fortress is one of the oldest churches in Russia, with an area of only 72 m².
The museum in the fortress opened in 1971, and in 1984 a museum-reserve was created on its basis.
