Serpukhov: bison, the kremlin and Vysotsky Monastery

      ⏱ 10 h 50 min🚶 5 km + 🚕🍽 2📍 6 stops
      🚶 Moderate — 3–7 km

The Lastochka train to Serpukhov: in the morning, European bison and American bison at the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve; in the afternoon, Cathedral Hill, the Maraev factory-owners’ museum and Vysotsky Monastery.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture🌳 Parks and nature🚆 Out of town
      👶 3–6, 7–12 years · ✓ stroller-friendly

The platforms at Kursky Station and in Serpukhov are high. The path to the bison is a 2.2 km dirt forest road: a big-wheeled stroller can manage it in dry weather, but it’s muddy after rain. Cathedral Hill is a steep climb.

        • It is the only state nature reserve in the Moscow region and one of the smallest in Russia.
        • The reserve was created on 19 June 1945 and in 1979 joined UNESCO's world network of biosphere reserves.
        • The bison nursery was founded in 1948 by Mikhail Zablotsky, whose name the whole reserve now bears.
        • The nursery covers 200 ha: each bison family lives in its own enclosure, and the enclosures are linked by long corridors.
        • The golden bison on the coat of arms of Serpukhov District came about thanks to this nursery.
        • In the south of the reserve grows the “Oka flora”, steppe plants described in 1861 by Moscow University professor N. N. Kaufman.
        • Beavers, exterminated by the early 20th century, were brought back in 1948: two pairs were brought from the Voronezh Reserve.

        📖 More about the placeCollapse
        • An oak kremlin was built here in 1374, when Prince Vladimir Andreevich made Serpukhov the capital of his appanage.
        • The stone kremlin of 1556 was entirely of white stone, a rarity among fortresses of that time.
        • The walls ran along the edge of the hill in an irregular triangle 933 metres long.
        • The townspeople last sheltered behind the walls in 1633, from a raid by the Crimean prince Mubarak-Giray.
        • In 1934 the kremlin was dismantled for stone to build the Moscow metro.
        • A wooden church stood on the site of the Trinity Cathedral as early as the 14th century, and the cathedral took its present look in the rebuilding of 1837–1841.
        • The 17th-century bell tower, hidden under 19th-century cladding, was uncovered in 1967–1970 by the architect Nikolay Sveshnikov.

        • Factory owner Anna Maraeva's mansion was built in 1896 to a design by Roman Klein, the architect of the Museum of Fine Arts on Volkhonka.
        • The museum was founded in 1918, and its core was the Maraev collection, brought in 1919 from a country house in the village of Danki.
        • The collection was based on 377 paintings and graphic works by European and Russian masters that Maraeva bought from the official Yuri Merlin.
        • In the 1920s the holdings were expanded with items from nearby estates: Raysemenovskoye, Semyonovskaya Otrada, Telyatyevo and Ostafyevo.
        • Some Western European artists are represented in Russia only by works from the Serpukhov collection.
        • Next door stands an Old Believer Intercession Church of the early 20th century by Mikhail Piotrovich, a church without an altar.

        • The monastery was founded in 1374 by Prince Vladimir of Serpukhov, the very man who commanded the ambush regiment at the Battle of Kulikovo.
        • After the Battle of Kulikovo the prince buried the fallen Serpukhov soldiers at the monastery; the burial place can be seen in the undercroft of the Conception Cathedral.
        • The Vysotsky Deesis, a row of icons believed to have influenced Andrei Rublev's manner, comes from here.
        • The Intercession Church keeps the icon “The Inexhaustible Cup”, to which people travel to pray for deliverance from drinking and drug addiction.
        • In 1878, for the monastery's 500th anniversary, the Church of Athanasius of Athos and Sergius of Radonezh was built over the grave of Athanasius Vysotsky the Younger.
        • The Byzantine-style Church of All Saints was built in 1896 with money from the factory owner Nikolay Konshin to a design by Roman Klein.
