        • Locomotive 9P-742 was placed by the station in 2001 as a gift from the Ministry of Railways for Dubna's 45th anniversary.
        • The installation is called “Trans-Siberian No. 512”, although Dubna has nothing to do with the Trans-Siberian.
        • The double-headed eagle on the locomotive is a curiosity: 9P-series engines were built in the USSR in 1935–1957.
        • The station was built in the mid-1930s for the canal construction; its name comes from the “Bolshaya Volga” (Greater Volga) plan, whose first hub was the Ivankovo hydroscheme.
        • The old station was preserved and restored, and in 2004 a new two-storey station complex was built next to it.

        🌅 Bolshoy Volzhsky Lighthouse
Дубна, район Большая Волга, мыс у впадения канала в Волгу
A lighthouse on the cape between the Volga, the Ivankovo Reservoir and the Moscow Canal; you can't get up to the lighthouse itself, but from the bank near it you can see the “three waters”.
About 20 minutes on foot south along the canal. From the shore by the lighthouse you can see the point where the canal meets the Volga and the Moscow Sea; you can't get to the lighthouse itself, as it's in operation

        • The lighthouse was built in 1937 by prisoners of Dmitlag who were building the Moscow–Volga canal.
        • The 25-metre brick tower is in the spirit of constructivism.
        • It is the only working river lighthouse in Central Russia; it operates during the navigation season.
        • It is a leading light: it works as a pair with the 6.5 m Maly Volzhsky Lighthouse, and together they show ships the entrance to the canal.
        • On the other bank of the canal stands a 37-metre monument to Lenin including its pedestal, the second largest in the world.

🌅 Site of the Stalin Monument at the Canal Entrance
Дубна, Большая Волга, левый берег входа в канал им. Москвы
The cape at the entrance to the Moscow Canal where a 25-metre monument to Stalin stood from 1937 to 1962; now there is a plaque and a view of the Volga and Lock No. 1.
About 20 minutes along the canal. From 1937 to 1962 a monument to Stalin stood here (now only a plaque remains). From here across the water, 330 m away, you can see the 25-metre Lenin by Lock No. 1: the figures were set as a pair, facing each other. You can't walk to the other bank — only over the dam, a detour of 7-8 km

        • Sergey Merkurov's figure of Stalin was 25 metres tall and weighed more than 540 tonnes.
        • The statue's head was carved from a granite monolith weighing 22 tonnes, and a special crane was designed to install it.
        • The monument formed a pair with Merkurov's monument to Lenin on the opposite bank of the canal.
        • In the summer of 1959 lightning struck the statue's shoulder and shifted one of the granite blocks.
        • The statue was destroyed during de-Stalinisation; a reduced copy stands in Moscow's Muzeon park.
        • In 2018 a plaque appeared here: “Here stood the monument to I. V. Stalin from 1937 to 1962”.
        • The monuments to Stalin and Lenin at the canal entrance can be seen in the film “Volga, Volga”.

An avenue of mosaics by the Mir Palace of Culture: portraits of famous people of the 20th century from Nadezhda Leger's sketches
        📖 More about the placeCollapse
        • For a solo exhibition in France in 1972, Nadia Léger made 65 mosaics and gave 60 of them to the USSR.
        • In 1974, 20 mosaics were brought to Dubna for an exhibition and installed in front of the Mir House of Culture.
        • The mosaics, which had begun to deteriorate, were put in storage at JINR and returned after repairs in 1996, for the town's 40th anniversary.
        • Portraits of Marx, Lenin and Krupskaya were never displayed in Dubna, “for ideological reasons”.
        • Ten mosaics stand by the Mir House of Culture, and another 4, portraits of cosmonauts, on Kosmonavtov Square by the Oktyabr House of Culture.
        • Nadia Léger was the widow of Fernand Léger and founded his museum in Biot; at its 1960 opening the honorary chairmen were Braque, Picasso and Chagall.

        • Dubna is the only town in the Moscow region on the Volga.
        • The embankment has carried Mendeleev's name since 2009.
        • Two rotundas, staircases down to the water and a fence with flower bowls were built in the 1950s.
        • In the late 1950s the bank was planted with apple trees, and the rotundas on the apple alley became one of Dubna's symbols.
        • Vysotsky often came to Dubna: the alley by the Mir House of Culture is named after him, and a monument to the poet stands there too.
