        • According to the chronicle, the fortress was founded by Yuri Dolgoruky in 1154, and the town was named after his son Dmitry, born here, the future Vsevolod the Big Nest.
        • The rampart stretches for 990 metres and is 7–9 metres high; it was finally heaped up between the mid-12th and late 13th centuries.
        • The fortress was sacked at least seven times, including by Batu in 1238, Tokhtamysh in 1382 and Edigei in 1408.
        • In 1301 four Russian princes met here; the four crowns in Dmitrov's coat of arms commemorate that gathering.
        • In 1610 the wooden kremlin was burned by Sapieha's retreating troops and never rebuilt.
        • Excavations in 2001–2003 found traces of a 10th-century Slavic settlement under the kremlin.

        • The exact building date is unknown: the foundation is placed in 1507 or 1509, in the time of Dmitrov's prince Yuri Ivanovich, son of Ivan III.
        • The cathedral resembles the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, and researchers believe Italian masters took part in building it.
        • The facade has a mid-16th-century tiled bas-relief of St George, 3 metres in diameter.
        • The carved iconostasis of the late 17th century was made by Armoury Chamber masters; two of its icons were painted in the early 15th century.
        • The classicist bell tower was built in 1793–1796 to a design by the serf architect M. Ya. Agafonov.
        • In 1792 a carved tent-roofed bishop's seat of the 17th century was brought here from the bishop's residence at Krutitsy.
        • The icon of St Demetrius of Thessalonica of the late 12th century, once kept here, is now in the Tretyakov Gallery.

        • Kropotkin lived in Count Olsufyev's house from May 1918 until his death on 8 February 1921 and worked on his “Ethics” here.
        • The Kropotkin House Museum opened on 6 September 2014; the authentic stoves and a fireplace of the late 19th century survive in it.
