      🚶 Moderate — 3–7 km

By commuter train to Abramtsevo, where Serov, Vrubel and Vasnetsov lived and worked at Mamontov's, then on foot through the forest to Khotkovo Monastery and dinner by the station.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture🎨 Art🌳 Parks and nature🚆 Out of town
      👶 3–6, 7–12 years · ✗ hard with a stroller

From Abramtsevo platform to the estate there's a dirt forest path with a little bridge, the park has dirt paths, and the main house and church have steps. Platforms on the Yaroslavl line are high, but at Abramtsevo you go down by stairs. With a stroller it's easier to go to Khotkovo and take bus No. 55 from there.

        • The house was built under the Golovins in the late 18th century: it is the oldest building on the estate and a rare monument of wooden classicism.
        • The mezzanine with two rooms was added by the Molchanovs, who bought the estate in 1797.
        • Gogol stayed in the mezzanine room with windows onto the yard, and in August 1849 read chapters of the second volume of “Dead Souls” at Abramtsevo.
        • After buying the estate in 1870, Mamontov wrote that the house had to be almost rebuilt: no foundation, a rotten roof, not a single usable stove.
        • The Mamontovs gathered the furniture, paintings and books of the Aksakov exhibition from Moscow antique shops and junk dealers.
        • The estate museum was founded on 10 October 1919, and Mamontov's daughter Alexandra Savvichna became its first keeper.
        • Tarkovsky's “Solaris” (1972) and Avdotya Smirnova's “Two Days” (2011) were filmed at Abramtsevo.

        • The outbuilding was built in 1873 to a design by Viktor Hartmann; it is his only surviving wooden building.
        • Hartmann made no drawings and never came to the building site: the house was built by foreman Gromov from verbal instructions, Mamontov complained.
        • The workshop has no ceiling: light comes through a window across the whole east wall, a dormer window and roof lucarnes.
        • Hartmann borrowed the carved ornament on the porch, window frames and cornices from folk embroidery.
        • In the Mamontovs' time Antokolsky and Mamontov himself sculpted here, Vasnetsov and Repin worked here, and in summer Serov and Ostroukhov lived in the living rooms.
        • In the 1920s the family of the artist Pyotr Konchalovsky lived in the outbuilding.
        • Since 2016 it has housed a permanent Vrubel exhibition: the ceramic suite “The Snow Maiden”, “The Egyptian Woman”, vases and stove tiles.
        • Mamontov set up the pottery workshop where Vrubel made majolica in 1889–1890.

        • The church was built in 1881–1882 by the architect Pavel Samarin from a sketch by Vasnetsov, with Savva Mamontov's money.
        • Vasily Polenov and Natalya Yakunchikova were married here in 1882.
        • The mosaic pattern of the concrete floor, like the iconostasis, was made by the artists and members of the Mamontov family themselves.
        • In 1892 a stove designed by Vrubel was installed in the church.
        • In the same year, 1892, a corner of the porch was rebuilt into a chapel over the grave of the Mamontovs' son Andrey.
        • Elizaveta Grigoryevna Mamontova (1908) and Savva Mamontov himself (1918) are buried by the church walls.

        • The gazebo was built in 1883 to a design by Viktor Vasnetsov not far from the church.
        • The log house of thick logs stands on stumps, and the ridge over the north gable is decorated with a carved horse's head.
        • The owls and bats on the gables later became popular motifs of Russian Art Nouveau.
        • Mikhail Nesterov, on first coming to Abramtsevo, called the hut a “pagan shrine” and a “wonderful creation”.
        • The majolica bench from Vrubel's sketches was installed in 1915 on “Tanyon's Nose”, a cape named after the Mamontovs' tutor Jules Tanion.
        • In 1965–1971 the bench was restored, with the missing tiles picked from archaeological finds of the Abramtsevo workshop.

        • The monastery is first mentioned in 1308 and was originally mixed, for both monks and nuns.
        • Sergius of Radonezh's elder brother Stephen also lived here as a monk before withdrawing to a hermit's life.
        • By tradition, pilgrims on the way to the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius first paid respects to Sergius's parents, and the road ran straight through the monastery.
        • The relics of Cyril and Maria are kept in the classicist Intercession Cathedral of 1812–1816.
        • The Byzantine-style St Nicholas Cathedral was built in 1900–1904 to a design by the architect A. A. Latkov.
        • Mikhail Nesterov painted studies here for “Holy Russia”, including “The Wanderer Anton” in 1896.
        • The monastery was closed in 1922, and monastic life returned only in 1989.
