      🏛 Experimental district Severnoye Chertanovo

      мкр. Северное Чертаново, Балаклавский пр.

A "district of the future" conceived in the 1970s: tall blocks on a shared podium, cars go into underground roads and garages, and the courtyards are left to pedestrians.

      • The district was built in 1975–1982 to a design by the engineer Lev Dyubek; the architects included Mikhail Posokhin.
      • Under each building an underground parking lot was built at one car per three apartments, and the entrance to it ran through a car wash.
      • The building sections are connected by warm first-floor halls — you can walk from one end of the district to the other almost without going outside.
      • A pneumatic waste disposal system was tried here — the only one in Soviet housing construction.
      • The numbering is continuous: "building 207" means house 2, entrance 7.
      • Contrary to the myth, this is not the Olympic Village: the project brief was drawn up in 1972, and Moscow only won the Olympics in 1975.
      • The writer Viktor Pelevin is among the district's residents.
