🏛 Sobornaya Gora and the Trinity Cathedral

      Серпухов, Соборная гора

The hill above the Nara where the Serpukhov Kremlin stood: the Trinity Cathedral and remains of the white-stone fortress wall.

      • An oak kremlin was built here in 1374, when Prince Vladimir Andreevich made Serpukhov the capital of his appanage.
      • The stone kremlin of 1556 was entirely of white stone, a rarity among fortresses of that time.
      • The walls ran along the edge of the hill in an irregular triangle 933 metres long.
      • The townspeople last sheltered behind the walls in 1633, from a raid by the Crimean prince Mubarak-Giray.
      • In 1934 the kremlin was dismantled for stone to build the Moscow metro.
      • A wooden church stood on the site of the Trinity Cathedral as early as the 14th century, and the cathedral took its present look in the rebuilding of 1837–1841.
      • The 17th-century bell tower, hidden under 19th-century cladding, was uncovered in 1967–1970 by the architect Nikolay Sveshnikov.
