🖼 Fort No. 5 “King Frederick William III”

      ул. Михаила Булатова

The best known of the forts in Königsberg’s “night-time featherbed” ring: casemates, posterns and a water-filled moat, taken by storm in 1945.

      • The fort was built at the end of the 19th century: a hexagon of brick and concrete, 215 by 105 metres, surrounded by a water-filled moat.
      • In 1886 it was additionally covered with a layer of reinforced concrete about two metres thick.
      • The fort guarded the roads to Pillau and Rauschen and was taken by storm in early April 1945.
      • It is named after King Frederick William III, who ruled Prussia during the Napoleonic Wars.
      • The fort became a museum of the history of the Great Patriotic War in 1979 and has been open to visitors since 2010.
