        • The fort was built at the end of the 19th century: a hexagon of brick and concrete, 215 by 105 metres, surrounded by a water-filled moat.
        • In 1886 it was additionally covered with a layer of reinforced concrete about two metres thick.
        • The fort guarded the roads to Pillau and Rauschen and was taken by storm in early April 1945.
        • It is named after King Frederick William III, who ruled Prussia during the Napoleonic Wars.
        • The fort became a museum of the history of the Great Patriotic War in 1979 and has been open to visitors since 2010.

🏛 Juditten Church (St Nicholas Church)
        Тенистая аллея, 39б
A 13th-century Teutonic Order church built of boulders — the oldest building in Kaliningrad, now a convent church.
The boulder church of 1288 is a convent dependency: women had better bring a headscarf.

        • It is the oldest surviving building in Kaliningrad: its foundation is generally dated to 1288.
        • The church was built by the Teutonic Order; by the end of the 14th century it had become a well-known place of pilgrimage for the knights.
        • The main nave is built of rough, undressed boulders.
        • At the end of the 14th century an artist named Peter painted the choir and the triumphal arch with frescoes.
        • It is now a dependency of a convent dedicated to the Derzhavnaya (“Reigning”) icon of the Mother of God.

        • Amalienau was built in the early 20th century on the “garden city” concept — a blend of country and town.
        • The streets here deliberately don’t cross at right angles: each was conceived as an avenue of trees.
        • The houses were built in Jugendstil, and the rules allowed no more than two storeys plus an attic.
        • The most luxurious villas are on Kutuzova Street; each was built to its own design.
        • The district suffered little in the war; plain post-war houses stand next to the elegant villas.
