      🌳 Dancing Forest

      Куршская коса, 37-й км

Pines with trunks twisted into rings and spirals on Kruglaya Dune — the most mysterious place on the Curonian Spit.

      • The forest on Kruglaya Dune near the village of Rybachy was planted in 1961 to hold the sand in place.
      • Scientists argue about why the trunks are bent: wind, geomagnetic fields and pine shoot moth caterpillars have all been suggested.
      • The caterpillars eat the top bud of a young pine, and the tree grows from a side bud instead — which bends the trunk.
      • The Curonian Spit has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000.
