Curonian Spit: Efa Height and the Dancing Forest

      ⏱ 10 h🚶 6 km + 🚆🚌🍽 2📍 4 stops
      🚶 Moderate — 3–7 km

A day on the spit without a car: the Lastochka to Zelenogradsk, bus 210 to Morskoye, the white dunes of Efa and the spiral pines of the Dancing Forest. Out of season almost everything on the spit is closed — bring pies with you.

In Zelenogradsk, pick up pies to take away: on the spit almost no cafés are open in October. Bus 210 leaves from the station square.
🍴 A café of Prussian pies — handy to take with you to the spit. What to order: pie with marinated zander, flounder or sprats, marzipan pie.

A wooden boardwalk up the high white dunes, with views of the Curonian Lagoon and forest to the horizon at once.
From the Morskoye stop it’s about 1.5 km on foot to the viewing platform along a boardwalk trail. It’s windy at the top — bring a hat.

        • The highest point of the dune, about 62 metres, is named after the dune inspector Franz Epha, who stabilised the shifting sands.
        • In the 19th century the dune was moving towards the village of Pillkoppen — today’s Morskoye — and threatened to bury the houses.
        • The white dunes of the spit stretch in a belt up to a kilometre wide and rise to 67 metres.
        • Curonian Spit National Park was created in 1987; in 2023 it had more than a million visitors.

Pines with trunks twisted into rings and spirals on Kruglaya Dune — the most mysterious place on the Curonian Spit.
The loop trail through the Dancing Forest is short — 40 minutes is enough. Don’t climb through the loops of the trunks: it harms the trees.

        • The forest on Kruglaya Dune near the village of Rybachy was planted in 1961 to hold the sand in place.
        • Scientists argue about why the trunks are bent: wind, geomagnetic fields and pine shoot moth caterpillars have all been suggested.
        • The caterpillars eat the top bud of a young pine, and the tree grows from a side bud instead — which bends the trunk.
        • The Curonian Spit has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000.
