        • The museum was built in 1885–1895 to a design by Maximilian Messmacher and opened on 30 April 1896 in the presence of the imperial family.
        • The construction and the purchase of exhibits were paid for from the interest on the capital bequeathed by Baron Alexander Stieglitz.
        • The Great Exhibition Hall under the dome measures 34 by 17 metres and is 22 metres high.
        • The dome was originally made of coloured painted glass from Zettler's Munich factory, with a pattern of golden stars.
        • During the war a blast wave knocked out the dome's glazing, and in 1947 it was glazed with clear glass.
        • For the facade Messmacher took motifs from the Venetian Library of St Mark and the Palazzo Corner.
        • In the 1920s the collection was handed out to other museums, and in 1947 the exhibits began to return.

        • The museum grew out of the exhibition “The Heroic Defence of Leningrad”, which it was decided to create during the siege itself, in December 1943.
        • In August 1945 the exhibition was visited by Marshal Zhukov and the American General Eisenhower.
        • Among the first exhibits were Tanya Savicheva's diary and an eight-metre pyramid of pierced German helmets.
        • By 1946 the museum had 37,654 exhibits; its first director was the historian Lev Rakov.
        • In 1952 the museum was closed in the course of the “Leningrad Affair”, and reopened only in 1989.
        • The building was built in 1901–1903 to a design by Pyotr Trifanov for the Handicrafts Museum.

        • The church is dedicated to Panteleimon because on his feast day Peter I's fleet beat the Swedes at Gangut (1714) and Grengam (1720).
        • The stone church was built in 1735–1739 to a design by Ivan Korobov, on the site of a church for workers of the Particular Shipyard.
        • In 1833–1834 Pushkin lived across the street and often attended services here.
        • In 1854 a priest was called from here to Tchaikovsky's dying mother; later the composer always dropped into this church.
        • The plaques listing the regiments that fought at Gangut and Grengam were fixed to the facade in 1914.
        • The Panteleimonovsky Bridge and the former Panteleimonovskaya Street — now Pestel Street — are named after the church.
