Polar explorers, sharks and stars under a roof

      ⏱ 5 h🚶 2.3 km🍽 1📍 4 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

A rainy day with a child along Marata: a polar explorers' tent, khinkali, a tunnel under sharks and the planetarium dome in a gasholder.

👶 With kids☔️ If it rains
      👶 3–6, 7–12 years · ✗ hard with a stroller

The pavements on Marata and the Obvodny are even, but in the museums strollers are usually left in the cloakroom — easier if your child already walks or rides in a light stroller.

        • The oceanarium opened on 27 April 2006 in the Planeta Neptun shopping and entertainment complex.
        • The project was designed by the Finnish architect Hannu Laitila, who also designed Petersburg's “Finland House”.
        • Its 57 aquariums hold over 1.5 million litres of water and about 150 species of fish and invertebrates.
        • The main aquarium holds 750,000 litres, and the transparent tunnel under it stretches 35 metres.
        • The first seal, Uma, was found injured on the shore of the Gulf of Finland in 2007 and handed to the oceanarium.
        • Sea water is prepared from tap water: Baltic water is too fresh and too dirty for this.

        • The planetarium opened on 3 November 2017 in a gasholder of the Main Gas Works of the Capital Lighting Society.
        • The empty building was spotted by chance in 2015 by the entrepreneur Yevgeny Gudov while walking along the Obvodny Canal.

        • The dome's frame is assembled from 1,500 wooden beams and 507 steel “Haeckels” — joints named after the naturalist Ernst Haeckel.
        • The dome is 2 metres wider than that of the planetarium in Nagoya, Japan, the previous Guinness record holder.
        • The image on the dome is produced by 40 projectors with 8K resolution.
