The Mosque, Kshesinskaya Mansion and the Aurora

      ⏱ 55 min🚶 1.2 km🍽 0📍 4 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

The turquoise dome of the Cathedral Mosque, the Art Nouveau Kshesinskaya Mansion, Peter's Cabin of 1703 and the cruiser on Petrogradskaya Embankment. The Neva is beside you all the way.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture⏱ An hour or so
      👶 7–12, 13+ years · ✓ stroller-friendly

The fortress has cobblestones. The Aurora has steep gangways and thresholds, and strollers are left in the cloakroom. Look at the Artillery Museum's courtyard with its cannons from outside — stroller access to the halls isn't confirmed, so ask at the ticket office. Peter's Cabin is cramped.

        • The mosque was founded on 3 February 1910 in the presence of Emir of Bukhara Sayyid Abdul-Ahad Khan, who gave the money to buy the plot.
        • The project's author is Nikolay Vasilyev; 45 designs took part in the 1908 competition.
        • The artist L. Maksimov travelled to Samarkand to copy the ornaments of the Shah-i-Zinda and Gur-e-Amir mosques.
        • The main dome rises 39 m and the minarets 48 m; the mosque holds 5,000 people.
        • In 1915, to raise money for its completion, the mosque was opened for paid viewing.
        • The mosaics for the portal, dome and minarets were made by craftsmen in the village of Kikerino near Gatchina.

        • The mansion was built in 1904–1906 for the ballerina Mathilde Kschessinska to a design by Alexander von Hohen.
        • The facades combine red and grey granite, brick and majolica — a textbook example of Northern Art Nouveau.
        • In spring 1917 the Bolsheviks settled here: Lenin worked in the mansion from 3 (16) April to 4 (17) July.
        • Kschessinska filed an eviction suit, naming among the defendants the “candidate of law V. I. Ulyanov”; the judge ordered the party organisations evicted.
        • In 1920 the ballerina emigrated to France.
        • In 1957 the mansion was joined to the neighbouring Brandt mansion for the Museum of the Revolution.
        • Since 1991 it has housed the Museum of Political History of Russia.

        • The cabin was built by soldier-carpenters in three days, 24 to 26 May 1703 (New Style); its area is about 60 m².
        • Peter ordered the logs painted to look like red brick and the roof covered with shingles resembling tiles — so the house would look like stone.
        • There are no stoves in the house: Peter lived in it only in the warm season, from 1703 to 1708.
        • The first stone casing was put up in 1784 by decree of Catherine II after the flood of 1777; the present one dates from 1844.
        • From the 1740s Peter's dining room held the Chapel of the Saviour Not Made by Hands — students came here to pray before exams.
        • The bronze bust of Peter in front of the cabin was installed in 1875.
        • The museum opened in 1930; today it is a branch of the Russian Museum.

        • The cruiser was launched at the New Admiralty on 11 (24) May 1900 in the presence of Nicholas II.
        • She is named after the sailing frigate ‘Aurora’, which defended Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the Crimean War.
        • At the Battle of Tsushima in 1905 the Aurora took 18 hits from Japanese shells, but survived.
        • A blank shot from the Aurora in autumn 1917 became the signal for the storming of the Winter Palace.
        • In 1941 nine 130-mm guns were taken off the cruiser for Battery ‘A’, which defended Leningrad at Duderhof.
        • The cruiser took up her permanent berth on 17 November 1948; naval cadets then lived and studied aboard.
        • During the 1984–1987 repair almost the whole underwater part of the hull was replaced.
