      ⏱ 5 h 30 min🚶 7 km🍽 1📍 3 stops
      🏃 A lot — over 7 km

One of Europe’s largest landscape parks — a long walk in nature.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture🌳 Parks and nature🚆 Out of town
      👶 3–6, 7–12, 13+ years · ✓ stroller-friendly

The park paths are unpaved and hilly in places, with slopes down to the Slavyanka — better to bring an off-road stroller. Strollers are allowed into Pavlovsk Palace if the wheels are clean: there are two outdoor lifts at the entrance, the 1st floor is accessible, and there is no lift to the 2nd.

        • The palace was founded on 25 May 1782 to a design by Charles Cameron for Grand Duke Paul Petrovich and Maria Feodorovna.
        • Cameron, Brenna, Quarenghi, Voronikhin and Rossi all worked on the palace — each left his own halls.
        • The dome over the central Italian Hall is ringed by 64 columns.
        • On 10 January 1803 a fire broke out in the palace that lasted more than a day; the interiors were restored by Voronikhin.
        • In 1944 the retreating troops burned the palace, but the curator Anna Zelenova managed to evacuate and hide part of the collections.
        • The postwar restoration lasted until 1970; of the palace's more than 300 rooms, 45 are open to visitors.

        • The park's history began on 12 December 1777, when Catherine II gave her son Paul lands on the banks of the Slavyanka.
        • The park covers about 600 ha and is divided into seven districts, from the Slavyanka Valley to the White Birch.
        • The Temple of Friendship (1780–1782, Cameron) was conceived by the grand-ducal couple as a gift in return to Catherine II for the Pavlovsk lands.
        • The Apollo Colonnade was built in 1782–1783; in 1817 part of it collapsed in a thunderstorm, and it was decided not to restore the ruin.
        • The 250-ha White Birch woodland was created in 1801–1828 by the decorative artist Pietro Gonzaga.
        • The Pil Tower of 1797 was deliberately made to look like a ramshackle village house with a thatched roof.
