        • On the night of 17 (30) December 1916 Grigory Rasputin was murdered in this palace; Felix Yusupov was exiled to his estate in Rakitnoye for taking part.
        • The Yusupovs bought the palace in 1830 for 250,000 paper rubles — it was just one of their 57 palaces in Russia.
        • Construction began in the 1770s to a design by Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe for Count Andrey Shuvalov.
        • On the Dekabristov Street side, a gate arch and a seven-metre fence with a colonnade survive from the 18th century.
        • In 1830–1838 the architect Andrey Mikhailov completed the White Column Hall, the picture galleries and the home theatre.
        • Today the palace houses the Palace of Culture of Education Workers, with tours, exhibitions and concerts.

        • The bridge is named after the “Kiss” (Potselui) tavern of the merchant Nikifor Potseluev, which stood nearby from 1739.
        • Construction of the cast-iron bridge began in 1808, but because of the war with Napoleon it was finished only in 1816.
        • Griboyedov wrote that the flood of 1824 had shifted the Potseluev Bridge from its place.
        • In 1907–1908 the bridge was rebuilt to a design by Andrey Pshenitsky, keeping the granite obelisks.
        • The bridge is mentioned in the 1950s song “Leningrad Bridges”, performed by Leonid Utyosov.

        • Vladimir Nabokov was born in this house in 1899 and lived here until November 1917.
        • The house came to the family in 1897 as the dowry of the writer's mother, Yelena Rukavishnikova.
        • Nabokov called it “the only house in the world” and never bought real estate afterwards, living in hotels all his life.
        • On 8 November 1904 the drawing room hosted a meeting of the zemstvo congress that adopted constitutional demands; later the Cadet party's Central Committee met here.
        • The museum opened in April 1998 for the writer's centenary and belongs to the Philology Faculty of St Petersburg State University.
        • Among Nabokov's personal things in the museum are index cards, pencils, glasses and a Scrabble game.

        • The cathedral is consecrated in the name of St Isaac of Dalmatia because Peter I was born on his feast day, 30 May.
        • According to legend, Montferrand was told he would die right after finishing the cathedral, so the construction dragged on for 40 years, from 1818 to 1858.
        • Each 17-metre, 114-tonne column was raised into place in 40–45 minutes.
        • During the fire-gilding of the dome in 1838–1841, 60 craftsmen died of mercury vapour poisoning.
        • From 1931 to 1986 a Foucault pendulum on a 98-metre cable swung in the cathedral, showing the rotation of the Earth.
        • The cathedral's dome was the third in the world built on a metal frame.
        • The white marble iconostasis is decorated with malachite and Badakhshan lapis lazuli.

        • The palace was built by Rastrelli in 1753–1754 for Baron Sergey Stroganov; the architect lived in the earlier house on the site.
        • Under Rastrelli the palace had fifty state rooms; of his interiors the Great Hall and the ceremonial vestibule survive.
        • The ceiling painting of the Great Hall was done by Giuseppe Valeriani in 1753; the hall was later tactfully reworked by Voronikhin.
        • Voronikhin created a domed Mineral Cabinet in the palace; it was recreated in 2003.
        • The Stroganov collection included Boltraffio's "Portrait of a Youth as St Sebastian", then believed to be by Leonardo.
        • The palace was nationalised in 1918 and handed to the Russian Museum in 1988.

        • From September 1836 Pushkin rented the whole ground floor here, eleven rooms — "from one gate to the other", as the contract says.
        • In the study stands the authentic sofa on which the poet died on 29 January 1837.
        • In 2008 forensic experts found traces of blood on the sofa's leather that matched the blood on Pushkin's waistcoat and a lock of his hair.
        • The museum holds the waistcoat Pushkin wore at the duel and his death mask by the sculptor Samuil Halberg.
        • The first museum in the apartment opened on 13 February 1927.
        • In Natalya Nikolaevna's room hangs her portrait, painted by Alexander Bryullov in 1832.
        • In the early 18th century the architect Domenico Trezzini lived on this plot.

        • Pevchesky is the fourth widest bridge in St Petersburg, after the Blue, Apothecary and Kazan bridges.
        • The first, wooden bridge was built in 1834 to a design by Montferrand — for troops to pass to the parade at the opening of the Alexander Column.
        • The bridge got its name in 1840 because it leads up to the gates of the Court Capella (the Singers' Chapel).
        • Abroad, "Pevchesky Bridge" was a figurative name for the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Empire, which from 1828 stood nearby.
        • According to legend, Nicholas I ordered the bridge built after Count Golovkin, hurrying to dine with him, stepped past the ferry boat straight into the Moika.
        • At the opening of the cast-iron bridge in December 1840, Nicholas I was the first to cross it, in a carriage.

        • The square got its name in 1739, after the Imperial Stables Yard.
        • On 1 February 1837 Pushkin's funeral service was held in the Konyushennaya Church, from where the coffin was taken to the Svyatogorsk Monastery.
        • The Stables Department building was rebuilt by Vasily Stasov in 1817–1823, turning its main facade toward the square.
        • In 1812 Barclay de Tolly set off for the active army from the square, where court carriages gathered.
        • In 1883 the chapel from the site of the assassination attempt on Alexander II was moved here, when the Savior on Blood began to be built there.
        • In the 2010s the stables building was to be turned into an apart-hotel, but after protests by preservationists it was given to the Museum of the History of St Petersburg.

        • The church, 81 meters tall, took 24 years to build — from 1883 to 1907.
        • Alexander III rejected the designs of two competitions and approved the design by Alfred Parland and Archimandrite Ignaty (Malyshev).
        • The mosaics were made by Vladimir Frolov's workshop from sketches by more than 30 artists, among them Viktor Vasnetsov and Mikhail Nesterov.
        • During the siege the church was used as a morgue, and after the war as a scenery warehouse of the Maly Opera Theater.
        • In 1961 steeplejacks found a German high-explosive shell in the central dome, which had lain there for 18 years.
        • The museum opened on 19 August 1997 — exactly 90 years after the church was consecrated.
