Chernyshevskaya and Ploshchad Vosstaniya have no lifts — get to Tauride Garden by taxi or surface transport along Kirochnaya. The garden paths are even, and the curbs on Kirochnaya are low.

        🌳 Tauride Garden
        🚪 entrance from Potemkinskaya Street
A large landscape garden by the Tauride Palace with canals, hills and playgrounds.
Start with the pond — you can see ducks and swans right from the path, and the playgrounds are in the eastern part of the garden. Weekday mornings are the least crowded.

        • The garden was laid out in 1783–1800 by the English gardener William Gould at Prince Potemkin's Tauride Palace.
        • The ponds were filled with water from the Ligovsky Canal and stocked with sterlet, and the soil dug out was piled into hills.
        • The garden opened to the public only in 1866.
        • From 1958 it was the City Children's Park; the historic name was restored in 1975.
        • In Chukovsky's “Moydodyr”, it is in the Tauride Garden that the washcloth chases the hero and he meets the Crocodile.
        • The garden has monuments to Tchaikovsky (1990) and Yesenin (1995).

        🌳 Saltykov-Shchedrin Garden
A small green square with trees, paths and benches next to the Tauride Garden.
A small garden across Kirochnaya with a playground: quieter than Tauride, and handy for putting a baby down to nap in the stroller.

        • The garden's other name is the Preobrazhensky Regiment Barracks Garden, and it covers 0.84 hectares.
        • Kirochnaya Street, where the garden stands, was called Saltykov-Shchedrin Street from 1939 to 1998.

        🌳 Nekrasov Garden

Another playground on the way to lunch — a last chance to run around before eating.

        • The garden opened on 6 May 1885 as the Greek Square — after Grecheskiy Avenue and the Greek church nearby.
        • The garden's second old name was Prudki ("Little Ponds"): here were basins of the Ligovsky Canal, which in the 18th century supplied water to the Summer Garden's fountains; they were filled in in 1891.
        • In 1922 a bust of Nekrasov was placed in the garden, and it became the Nekrasov Garden; the present 3.4 m monument to the poet is by L. Yu. Eidlin, 1971.
        • At the exit toward the Oktyabrsky Concert Hall, a monument to Ioannis Kapodistrias was erected in 2003 — a gift from Greece for Petersburg's 300th anniversary.
