Hermitage with a child: knights, a mummy, the Peacock

      ⏱ 4 h🚶 2 km🍽 1📍 4 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

Stone atlantes, a kid-friendly Hermitage in two hours — knights in armor, the Egyptian hall and the Peacock clock — and then a game of Sea Battle in the museum of Soviet arcade machines.

      👶 With kids🎨 Art☔️ If it rains
      👶 7–12, 13+ years · ✗ hard with a stroller

The Hermitage has stairs and long enfilades, and the arcade museum is cramped — easier with a baby carrier. The streets between the stops are flat.

🏛 Atlantes of the New Hermitage
        Миллионная ул., 35
Ten granite figures holding up the museum's portico, each about five metres tall.
From Millionnaya: ten granite giants hold up the portico of the New Hermitage. There's a custom of rubbing an Atlantes' toes for luck; a child can easily reach the toes.

        • The atlantes were carved in 1846 from grey Serdobol granite by the sculptor Alexander Terebenev and 150 stonecutters.
        • The model for the figures was made by the Munich sculptor Johann von Halbig, based on the atlantes of the Temple of Zeus at Akragas in Sicily.
        • A curiosity: these mighty figures strain enormously to hold up only a light balcony.
        • The atlantes guard the entrance to the New Hermitage — Russia's first building constructed specially for a public museum (1842–1851).
        • Nicholas I commissioned the New Hermitage from the Munich architect Leo von Klenze after a trip to Munich in 1837.

        • The Hermitage dates from 1764, when 317 paintings of the merchant Gotzkowsky were handed to Catherine II from Berlin in settlement of a debt.
        • The present Winter Palace is the fifth one: built in 1754–1762, it became the tallest residential building in St Petersburg and had about 1,500 rooms.
        • The fire of 1837 destroyed all the palace's interiors, but under Stasov and Bryullov it was restored in just two years.
        • The Jordan Entrance is named after the "Jordan" ice hole: at Epiphany the royal family went out through it onto the ice of the Neva.
        • On 5 February 1880 the Narodnaya Volya member Stepan Khalturin set off a bomb in the palace, aiming at Alexander II: 11 guard soldiers died, the emperor was unharmed.
        • From October 1915 to November 1917 a hospital named for Tsarevich Alexei operated in the Winter Palace's state rooms.
        • The Hermitage collection was evacuated during the war, and not a single exhibit was lost.

        • The St Petersburg branch opened on 15 June 2013 — it is a branch of the museum founded in Moscow in 2007.
        • The museum was dreamed up by three graduates of a Moscow university: they started in a bomb-shelter basement of a dormitory with 37 machines.
        • The machines were hunted down at dumps and in abandoned pioneer camps; often one working machine was assembled from three broken ones.
        • In the 18th century the building stored carriages, and in Soviet times it housed the garages of Leningrad Taxi Park No. 1.

Lunch five minutes along Bolshaya Konyushennaya: a kids' room and kids' menu, pasta for adults. If you lingered at the arcade museum, it's handy to eat after 15:00, when it's less crowded.
🍴 An Italy Group restaurant by Konyushennaya Square with its own children's room and children's menu — a handy stop two steps from the Mikhailovsky Garden. What to order: for a toddler, a soup from the children's menu; for adults, pasta or risotto from the Italian menu.
