        🖼 Petersburg Doll Museum
        Камская ул., 8
🎟 ticket · workshops after shows by booking
A museum on Vasilievsky Island telling the history of the doll from ritual rag dolls to artists' dolls: Petersburg in dolls, folk festivals, theatre marionettes. On weekends — children's shows with a workshop.
Start with “Petersburg Perspective” — old Petersburg populated by dolls: the little scenes are fun to look at and to tell who is doing what. On weekends at 16:00 there are shows with a workshop — sign up in the museum's VKontakte group, closes a day ahead.

        • The museum opened in 1998; the core of the collection came from private collections.
        • In the “Petersburg Perspective” exhibition, 19th-century Petersburg is populated by doll townspeople.
        • A separate hall is given to artists' and interior dolls — works by contemporary makers.
        • There is an exhibition about Russian holidays with dolls in folk costumes.
        • On weekends the museum puts on puppet shows, followed by workshops for children.

        🚶 Smolenka Embankment
A quiet river on Vasilyevsky Island with green banks, benches and a view of the cemetery groves.
Go down to the river at the end of Kamskaya: ducks, a quiet embankment and benches — a breather after the museum before the walk across the island.

        • Before Petersburg was founded the river was called Yamakkayoki, in the 18th century Mayakusha, then the Black and the Glukhaya River.
        • The river received the name Smolenka in 1864 — after the Smolensky Cemetery and to avoid confusion with another Chernaya River.
        • In the 1960s–1970s a new mouth was dug for the river: it used to flow into the Malaya Neva, and now flows straight into the Gulf of Finland.
        • From 1805, on 1 August, the clergy of the cemetery church walked to the river in a procession to bless the water.

        29-я линия В.О., 2
        🎟 ticket
One of the most visited museums in Petersburg — a private museum of contemporary art with a permanent collection and changing exhibitions.
Then across the whole island — along the Lines, Sredny and Bolshoy prospekts to 29th Line, about 30 minutes. Kids like the bright paintings and installations; ask at the ticket office whether there is a family art quest with a route sheet right now. Some halls have nudity — check the age notes at the entrance. Closed on Tuesday.

        • The museum officially opened on 30 September 2010, having welcomed its first visitors back on 20 May.
        • The name stands for “era of art” — “Era” plus “Art”.
        • The building dates from 1951 in the Stalinist neoclassical style; in Soviet times it housed a district party committee, then a synthetic rubber institute.
        • The entrance is guarded by the sculptures of Era and Art by Dmitry Zhukov, made on the museum's commission.
        • The collection has over 2,800 works by more than 300 artists, from the 1950s to the present day.
