Victory Park: Siege Memory by the Pond

      ⏱ 1 h 5 min🚶 1.9 km🍽 1📍 4 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

A quiet part of Victory Park where the Siege crematorium stood: a wagonette, a memorial cross and an alley of bronze heroes. An hour after which the park looks different.

        🏛 The “Wagonette” memorial
Московский парк Победы, берег Адмиралтейского пруда
A genuine wagonette from the Siege-era crematorium on granite “rails” — the quietest and most sombre spot in Victory Park.
Enter the park from Basseynaya Street and head to Admiralteysky Pond, to the southwest shore. The hill by the water is heaped over ashes — people speak quietly here.

        • The memorial was unveiled on 8 September 2001, for the 60th anniversary of the start of the Siege.
        • In 1942–1943 Brick-and-Pumice Factory No. 1, on the site of the park, operated as a crematorium: official records say 131,985 bodies were burned.
        • The ashes were poured into clay pits that later became the park’s ponds.
        • The wagonette was raised from the bottom of Admiralty Pond in summer 1999; former factory workers recognised the mechanism.
        • The memorial’s architect is Anna Kostyurina.

🏛 Memorial cross on the site of the crematorium
Московский парк Победы, Мемориальная аллея Памяти 1942–1943 гг.
An Orthodox cross and memorial plaque on the site of the brick factory’s kilns — the first public remembrance of the Siege crematorium.
A few steps away, on Memory Alley. Read the memorial plaque — it tells of a factory that operated in 1942–1943.

        • The cross was erected in 1986 — before that, the crematorium was never spoken of.
        • The factory stood at the corner of today’s Moskovsky Prospekt and Basseynaya Street.
        • The crematorium ran three shifts, and one shift could take up to 800 bodies.
        • Since 2001 the memorial zone of the former factory has been a cultural heritage site.

🏛 Alley of Heroes in Victory Park
Московский парк Победы, главная аллея от Московского пр.
The park’s central avenue, lined with bronze busts of Leningraders who were twice Heroes of the Soviet Union and of Socialist Labour.
Come out onto the main avenue and head toward Moskovsky Prospekt past the busts: the pedestals carry names and ranks.

        • The alley is the main memorial of the park, which was laid out in honour of the Victory.
        • At first it held busts of Leningraders who were twice Heroes of the Soviet Union; busts of twice Heroes of Labour were added later.
        • The alley divides the park into a landscaped part and a formal one.
        • A monument to Stalin once stood where it crosses the central avenue; Zhukov stands there now.
