        🚶 Textile Workers' Town
        Лесной пр., 59
A housing estate of 1929–1931: five-storey blocks with setbacks and corner balconies — early Leningrad constructivism.
From Lesnaya, 5 minutes south along Lesnoy Prospekt. Look at the setbacks and corner balconies, and in the courtyard the row-like buildings.

        • The design by S. O. Ovsyannikov and D. T. Kovchev was only partly carried out.
        • The courtyard blocks stand in rows parallel to the avenue — the long buildings shield the short ones from dust and noise.
        • The blocks had no hot water: the boiler house supplied only heating.
        • A department-store canteen was planned for the sharp corner of the block.

        🏛 House of Specialists
        Лесной пр., 61
A building of 1934–1937 for scholars and engineers of the Vyborg Side — with a Siege-era inscription on its facade.
The neighboring block. Look on the facade for the inscription “Citizens! During artillery shelling…” and the memorial plaque to Natan Altman.

        • The architects were G. A. Simonov, B. R. Rubanenko, T. D. Katsenelenbogen and others; the decor is by the sculptor G. A. Shultz.
        • The house had lifts with lift attendants and rubbish chutes built right into the kitchen wall.
        • The facade preserves the inscription “Citizens! During artillery shelling this side of the street is the most dangerous”.
        • The artist Natan Altman, the radio engineer Mikhail Bonch-Bruevich and the polar captain Vladimir Voronin lived here.

        🚶 Polytechnic Institute Student Town
        Лесной пр., 65
A complex of dormitories of 1930–1933 by Lesnaya metro with a factory-kitchen, a club and a laundry.
Back toward the metro: dormitories with rounded staircases and a glazed factory-kitchen — right at the station exit.

        • Seven five-storey dormitories stand in mirror symmetry, with three-span passages along the axis.
        • The authors are S. E. Brovtsev, A. V. Petrov, M. D. Felger and K. V. Sakhnovsky.
        • The top floor of the factory-kitchen is fully glazed — the canteen was there.
        • Kantemirovskaya Street was laid later, and the complex “doesn't notice” it.

        🏛 Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory
        ул. Карбышева, 7
Russia's oldest meteorological institution — it has worked in Lesnoy, on Karbysheva Street, since 1942.
10 minutes along Lesnoy and Karbysheva. Behind the fence you can see a weather station with instruments and old buildings; no entry.

        • Under its director Heinrich Wild, uniform observation times and Celsius degrees were introduced at the stations.
        • The observatory moved to the Karbysheva building in 1942.

        • The form is stepped cylinders: the dough descended from the top to the rotating round oven.
        • Four departments of the factory worked during the Siege, and the factory was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, First Class.
        • In 1992 a monument was put up by the factory: “One hundred and twenty-five Siege grams, half fire and blood”.
        • 125 grams was the minimum bread ration, in force from 20 November to 25 December 1941.
