        🌅 Trinity Bridge
A drawbridge about 580 metres long with openwork lamps and views of the Peter and Paul Fortress.
Start by sunset (in late October — around 17:30) from the middle of the bridge: the fortress, Palace Embankment and the Strelka light up one after another. Troitsky Bridge opens deep in the night, around half past one — long after your walk.

        • The bridge was laid on 12 August 1897 under Nicholas II and French President Félix Faure, in response to the laying of the Pont Alexandre III in Paris.
        • Gustave Eiffel's firm won the competition, but construction went to the French company Batignolles.
        • Until 1965, when the Alexander Nevsky Bridge opened, the Trinity Bridge, at 582 m, was the longest in the city.
        • The bridge is dedicated to the 25th wedding anniversary of Alexander III and Maria Feodorovna — the plaques on the obelisks say so.
        • In 1918–1934 it was called the Equality Bridge, and in 1934–1991 the Kirov Bridge.
        • The Pulkovo meridian crosses the northern part of the bridge.
        • Since 2005 the raised span of the Trinity Bridge has been one of the symbols of the Scarlet Sails graduates' festival.

The grounds are open until 21:00. Walk through the Ioannovsky Gate to the beach by the walls: the Winter Palace glows opposite. Leave onto Kronverk through the Kronverksky Gate.

        • The fortress was founded on 16 (27) May 1703 — this day is considered the founding day of Petersburg.
        • The fortress never took part in military action.
        • From 1706 the earthen ramparts began to be replaced with brick ones; the bastions are named after Peter's associates — Menshikov, Naryshkin, Trubetskoy.
        • The Peter and Paul Cathedral was built in 1712–1733 to a design by Trezzini; the bell tower is 122.5 m high, and inside is the Romanov burial vault.
        • The Peter Gate is dedicated to the victories over Sweden; Trezzini designed its Baroque facade in 1708.
        • Until the early 1920s the Trubetskoy Bastion held a prison for political prisoners; Maxim Gorky was held there in 1905.
        • In 1991 a monument to Peter I by Mikhail Shemyakin was placed on the central alley.

        🌳 Kronverkskaya Embankment
        Кронверкская наб. (вдоль Кронверкского протока)
A quiet embankment between the Peter and Paul Fortress and Alexandrovsky Park: smooth asphalt, water and ducks in the channel.
A quiet stretch along the strait: lamps reflect in the water, and behind you is the lit spire of the cathedral.

        • The through road along the Kronverk Strait opened only in 1978.
        • The embankment received its name on 29 December 1980; before that it was nameless.
        • From the embankment you can see the Kronverk with the Military History Museum of Artillery and the obelisk at the site of the Decembrists' execution.

        🏛 Cathedral Mosque
        Кронверкский пр., 7
A large grey granite mosque with two minarets opposite the Peter and Paul Fortress.

        • The mosque was founded on 3 February 1910 in the presence of Emir of Bukhara Sayyid Abdul-Ahad Khan, who gave the money to buy the plot.
        • The project's author is Nikolay Vasilyev; 45 designs took part in the 1908 competition.
        • The artist L. Maksimov travelled to Samarkand to copy the ornaments of the Shah-i-Zinda and Gur-e-Amir mosques.
        • The main dome rises 39 m and the minarets 48 m; the mosque holds 5,000 people.
        • In 1915, to raise money for its completion, the mosque was opened for paid viewing.
        • The mosaics for the portal, dome and minarets were made by craftsmen in the village of Kikerino near Gatchina.

        🏛 Lidval House
        Каменноостровский пр., 1–3
An apartment building with a ceremonial courtyard where every window and facade detail is different — a model of Northern Art Nouveau.
Peek into the ceremonial courtyard from Kamennoostrovsky: at dusk you can clearly see that all the windows are different.

        • The house was built in 1899–1904 — Fyodor Lidval's first independent work, commissioned by his mother Ida Lidval.
        • The north wing served as the Lidval family's own mansion.
        • Four buildings of different heights surround a cour d'honneur, separated from the avenue by a fence on posts of red Finnish granite.
        • The facades carry reliefs of birds, animals and plants, and the year the building was finished is carved above the central portal.
        • The plot is trapezoid, yet Lidval managed without rooms with acute and obtuse angles.
        • In 1909 the painter Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin lived in the house, and in 1904 the family of General Kuropatkin.

        🏛 House with Towers
        пл. Льва Толстого
An apartment building with two tall towers on the corner of Kamennoostrovsky — the architectural dominant of the square.
The two towers over Lev Tolstoy Square look best in the dark, when the lights come on in the windows.

        • Construction of the House with Towers was completed in 1915; the architectural part was designed by Andrey Belogrud.
        • The developer was the engineer Konstantin Rosenstein, and he built this house for himself.
        • The floors are held by multi-span I-beams — an invention of Rosenstein himself.
        • In 1996 the Andrey Mironov Russian Entreprise Theatre opened in the house.

        🚶 Karpovka Embankment
A narrow river with granite embankments and trees, winding through the Petrogradskaya Side.
From Kamennoostrovsky Bridge turn right along the Karpovka — after the noisy avenue it is quiet and dark here, just lamps over the water.

        • The Karpovka is an arm of the Neva 3 km long and about 20 m wide, between Petrogradsky and Aptekarsky islands.
        • The name is a corruption of the Finnish Korpijoki, translated both as “forest” and as “crow” river.
        • The banks of the Karpovka were faced with granite only in the 1960s–70s.
        • No. 13 is the first residential building of the Leningrad Soviet (1932–1935, architects Levinson and Fomin), a model of Constructivism.
        • In 2021 the sculpture “Sad Angel” appeared by the Medical University, in memory of medics who died of coronavirus.
