        🌳 Kronverkskaya Embankment
        Кронверкская наб. (вдоль Кронверкского протока)
A quiet embankment between the Peter and Paul Fortress and Alexandrovsky Park: smooth asphalt, water and ducks in the channel.
Start around 17:00, while it's still light: the strait, ducks and the fortress walls across the water. Enter the fortress over Ioannovsky Bridge.

        • The through road along the Kronverk Strait opened only in 1978.
        • The embankment received its name on 29 December 1980; before that it was nameless.
        • From the embankment you can see the Kronverk with the Military History Museum of Artillery and the obelisk at the site of the Decembrists' execution.

        🏛 Ioannovsky Bridge
A wooden bridge with lamps — the main entrance to the Peter and Paul Fortress from the Gorkovskaya side.
Spot the hare on the pile by the bridge — people toss coins at it. The lamps on the bridge come on at dusk.

        • The oldest bridge in Petersburg: the first wooden bridge here was built in 1703.
        • It is named after the Ioannovsky Ravelin, which it leads to.
        • Under the bridge stands a figure of a hare on a pile — by legend, a hare was the first to run onto Hare Island, escaping a flood.
        • The main flow of visitors to the fortress from the Petrograd Side comes over the Ioannovsky Bridge — it is pedestrian-only.

        • The fortress was founded on 16 (27) May 1703 — this day is considered the founding day of Petersburg.
        • The fortress never took part in military action.
        • From 1706 the earthen ramparts began to be replaced with brick ones; the bastions are named after Peter's associates — Menshikov, Naryshkin, Trubetskoy.
        • The Peter and Paul Cathedral was built in 1712–1733 to a design by Trezzini; the bell tower is 122.5 m high, and inside is the Romanov burial vault.
        • The Peter Gate is dedicated to the victories over Sweden; Trezzini designed its Baroque facade in 1708.
        • Until the early 1920s the Trubetskoy Bastion held a prison for political prisoners; Maxim Gorky was held there in 1905.
        • In 1991 a monument to Peter I by Mikhail Shemyakin was placed on the central alley.

🌅 Nevsky Gate and Komendantskaya Pier
The fortress gate to the Neva and the granite pier in front of it — from here you can see the whole facade of the Palace Embankment.
Leave through the Nevsky Gate to the pier for sunset: the Winter Palace and the embankment light up directly opposite.

        • The Nevsky Gate led to the pier from which the condemned were taken by river to execution — hence the name “Gate of Death”.
        • The present stone gate was built in 1784–1787 to a design by Nikolai Lvov.
        • On the wall by the gate are marked the levels of the worst floods, including 1824.
        • From the pier you can see the entire Palace Embankment — from the Spit to the Troitsky Bridge.

        • The mosque was founded on 3 February 1910 in the presence of Emir of Bukhara Sayyid Abdul-Ahad Khan, who gave the money to buy the plot.
        • The project's author is Nikolay Vasilyev; 45 designs took part in the 1908 competition.
        • The artist L. Maksimov travelled to Samarkand to copy the ornaments of the Shah-i-Zinda and Gur-e-Amir mosques.
        • The main dome rises 39 m and the minarets 48 m; the mosque holds 5,000 people.
        • In 1915, to raise money for its completion, the mosque was opened for paid viewing.
        • The mosaics for the portal, dome and minarets were made by craftsmen in the village of Kikerino near Gatchina.

        🌅 Trinity Bridge
A drawbridge about 580 metres long with openwork lamps and views of the Peter and Paul Fortress.
The finale on Troitsky Bridge: behind you the spire of Peter and Paul, ahead the Field of Mars. Until 30 November the bridge opens around 1:20, and by then the route is long over.

        • The bridge was laid on 12 August 1897 under Nicholas II and French President Félix Faure, in response to the laying of the Pont Alexandre III in Paris.
        • Gustave Eiffel's firm won the competition, but construction went to the French company Batignolles.
        • Until 1965, when the Alexander Nevsky Bridge opened, the Trinity Bridge, at 582 m, was the longest in the city.
        • The bridge is dedicated to the 25th wedding anniversary of Alexander III and Maria Feodorovna — the plaques on the obelisks say so.
        • In 1918–1934 it was called the Equality Bridge, and in 1934–1991 the Kirov Bridge.
        • The Pulkovo meridian crosses the northern part of the bridge.
        • Since 2005 the raised span of the Trinity Bridge has been one of the symbols of the Scarlet Sails graduates' festival.

↩️ Getting back: from Troitsky Bridge to Gorkovskaya metro ≈10 min on foot back across Troitskaya Square, or ahead to the Field of Mars and by bus to Nevsky
