        🏛 Sennaya Square
A former market square with a metro station and shopping arcades — the heart of the “Dostoevsky” neighbourhoods.
        The novel begins here

        • The square appeared in 1738–1739 on a wasteland with hay warehouses; in 1952–1992 it was called Peace Square.
        • In June 1831 the cholera riot broke out on Sennaya: a crowd wrecked the cholera hospital.
        • Until the mid-19th century thieves and swindlers were publicly punished here — Nekrasov described these “market executions”.
        • The guardhouse building of 1818–1820 was built by Vikenty Beretti to a design by Luigi Rusca.
        • The Church of the Saviour on Sennaya was demolished in 1961, and a metro vestibule was built in its place.
        • Today three metro lines intersect under the square.

        🏛 “Raskolnikov's House”
        Гражданская ул., 19
An ordinary apartment building at the corner of Grazhdanskaya and Stolyarny with commemorative plaques and a bas-relief on the corner.

        • The house was built in 1831 by the architect Yegor Zollikofer.
        • As in the novel, thirteen steps lead up to the attic of the house.
        • The wall carries two marble plaques marking the water level of the flood of 7 November 1824, in Russian and in German.
        • The bas-relief on the corner was unveiled on 7 July 1999, and the text on the plaque was composed by Dmitry Likhachev and Daniil Granin.
        • In 1970 the house was rebuilt: the semi-basement was removed and the cobbled courtyard was paved over with asphalt.

        🏛 Pawnbroker's House
Средняя Подьяческая ул., 15 / наб. канала Грибоедова, 104
An apartment building that researchers consider the prototype of Alyona Ivanovna's house in Crime and Punishment: from "Raskolnikov's house" it is exactly those 730 steps.
Walk the 730 steps from “Raskolnikov's house” yourself; go into the courtyard quietly — it is a residential building

        • The house with two courtyards was built in 1800 by the manufacturer Ivan Walch.
        • In 1833 the house was raised to four storeys (five on the Podyacheskaya side) to a design by architect Liderits.
        • The search for the house seems to have been begun by the local historian Nikolai Antsiferov in his 1923 book Dostoevsky's Petersburg.
        • There are other versions of the old woman's address too — for example, the corner house at Kazanskaya 26 on the Griboedov Canal.
        • In the novel Alyona Ivanovna's flat is on the fourth floor, with the staircase entrance "right now from the gate, on the right".
        • The abbreviations in the novel were decoded in 1907 by Anna Dostoevskaya: "S— Lane" is Stolyarny, "K— Bridge" is Kokushkin.

        🏛 Lion Bridge
A narrow pedestrian bridge over the Griboyedov Canal whose chains are held by four cast-iron lions.

        • The bridge opened on 1 July 1826; it was designed at the same time as the Bank Bridge.
        • It is one of three surviving chain pedestrian bridges in Petersburg, along with the Bank and Pochtamtsky bridges.
        • The lions were modelled by the academician Pavel Sokolov, and the cast-iron figures were first painted matte white “like marble”.
        • Until 1912 the bridge was also called the Mariinsky and the Theatre Pedestrian Bridge.
        • In 1882 the embankment was raised by a row of granite blocks, and the lions were lifted together with their pedestals.

        • The bridge was built in 1785–1788; to make room for it, the just-completed granite embankments of the Fontanka had to be taken apart.
        • It was first called Ekaterininsky, from 1798 Chernyshev after Count Chernyshev's estate, and received Lomonosov's name on 23 August 1948.
        • It is one of seven standard tower bridges over the Fontanka; only two survive — this one and the Staro-Kalinkin Bridge.
        • The lifting mechanisms were hidden in four granite towers; the chains between the towers are a reminder that the middle span once lifted.
        • In 1912 the Academy of Arts defended the bridge's appearance: reconstruction was approved only if the towers were kept.

        🏛 Five Corners (Pyat Uglov)
An intersection where five streets meet; the corner is guarded by a house with a tall tented turret.
From here it is a five-minute walk to the museum along Zagorodny

        • The intersection of Zagorodny Prospekt, Razyezzhaya, Rubinstein and Lomonosov streets has existed since the 1760s.
        • The house with the turret was built in 1913–1914 to a design by the architect Alexander Lishnevsky.
        • Lydia Chukovskaya and the physicist Matvey Bronstein lived in the house with the turret, and Anna Akhmatova often visited them.
        • In 1800 the Commercial School — Russia's first school for merchants' children — moved into the house at the corner of Zagorodny and Lomonosov.
        • Five Corners is mentioned in Dostoevsky's The Idiot and Crime and Punishment, and in Vysotsky's song “A Little Voice from Leningrad”.

        • The church was built in 1761–1769, and the separate bell tower was completed by Giacomo Quarenghi in 1791.
        • In 1828 the funeral service for Arina Rodionovna, Pushkin's nanny, was held here.
        • Fyodor Dostoevsky was a parishioner of the church in the last years of his life.
        • The Baroque 18th-century iconostasis was moved here in 1808 from the church of the Anichkov Palace.
        • In 1932 the church was closed and a factory, Lenmashuchyot, was set up in it; it was returned to the Church in 1989.
        • Vladimirsky Prospekt and Vladimirskaya Square are named after the church.

        • Dostoevsky lived here from October 1878 until his death on 28 January 1881, and wrote The Brothers Karamazov and his Pushkin speech here.
        • The writer had first briefly lived in this house back in 1846.
        • The museum opened on 11 November 1971, on the 150th anniversary of Dostoevsky's birth.
        • The study is recreated from a photograph by Woldemar Taube, taken right after the writer's death in 1881.
        • The clock in the study belonged to the writer's younger brother Andrey Dostoevsky.
        • The one authentic item in the hallway is Dostoevsky's felt hat.
        • The exhibition is based on the collection of the writer's grandson, Andrey Fyodorovich Dostoevsky.
