        • The museum is built on Malcolm Forbes's collection: in 2004 Viktor Vekselberg bought it as a single lot just before the auction.
        • The museum opened on 19 November 2013 and became Russia's first private museum of national scale.
        • The palace restoration took seven years and cost roughly 1.2 billion rubles, with no state money.
        • The collection has over 4,000 items, including works by Fabergé's rivals Sazikov, Ovchinnikov and Khlebnikov.
        • In 1928 the building, then the House of the Press, hosted the famous OBERIU evening “Three Left Hours”.
        • During the First World War the palace's last owner, Countess Betsy Shuvalova, set up a field hospital here.

        • It is the oldest surviving building on Nevsky: construction began in 1741 by decree of Empress Elizabeth.
        • The design was by Mikhail Zemtsov, and after his death in 1743 Rastrelli completed the construction.
        • The palace stands sideways to Nevsky: its main entrance faced a canal dug from the Fontanka to the harbour by the palace.
        • The palace housed an apartment of the poet Vasily Zhukovsky, who taught the future Alexander II.
        • On 23 November 1836 Nicholas I received Pushkin here and demanded that he refrain from a duel.
        • On 12 February 1937 the Leningrad Palace of Pioneers opened here.
        • In front of the main building grows a birch planted by the cosmonauts Gherman Titov and Vladimir Komarov.

        • Yegor Sokolov's design for the building was approved by Catherine II in 1795; it took about 15 years to build.
        • The core of the foreign collection was the library of the Załuski brothers.
        • In its first year 329 readers registered at the library.
        • Ivan Krylov, Nikolai Gnedich, Konstantin Batyushkov and Anton Delvig worked at the library.
        • The wing facing the Catherine Garden was built by Carlo Rossi in 1832–1835.
        • Before the revolution the staff included a dachshund keeper: at night the dachshunds caught rats, and now the library is home to a "cat headquarters".

        • The garden in front of the theatre was laid out in summer 1832 by the master gardener Yakov Fyodorov.
        • The monument to Catherine II, designed by Mikhail Mikeshin, was unveiled in 1873.
        • The statue of the empress was sculpted by Matvey Chizhov, the figures of her associates by Alexander Opekushin.
        • Nine figures stand around the pedestal, among them Potemkin, Suvorov, Rumyantsev, Derzhavin and Dashkova.
        • In the early 1930s there were plans to replace Catherine with a statue of Lenin, but the monument survived.
        • The bronze Suvorov's sword was stolen and has been recreated twice.
        • Locals call the garden "Katkin sadik" (Katka's little garden).
