        • The stone church was built with funds from Colonel A. Belov and the Sibilev nobles, and consecrated in 1764.
        • The prototype of the cathedral is the Peter and Paul Cathedral: its spired bell tower rises 52 metres.
        • In 1935 the cathedral was closed and the bell tower was converted into a parachute jumping tower.
        • In 1967 the building was given to the Melodiya gramophone record factory.
        • The cathedral was returned to the Church in 1990, and the spire of the bell tower was restored in 2014–2015.
        • Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Golitsyn, who died in 1737, is buried by the Church of St Nicholas.

        • The monument to Peter I by the pier was cast in 1957 from Mark Antokolsky's model of 1872.
        • It was the first monument to the tsar erected in the USSR after the 1917 revolution.
        • A cast of the same model stands in Arkhangelsk — it is shown on the 500-rouble banknote.
        • The 117-km Staroladozhsky Canal was built from 1719 to 1730 — then the largest hydraulic structure in Europe.
        • The granite locks in Shlisselburg were built in 1826, along with a drawbridge on granite columns.
        • Peter I gave Shlisselburg ("key-city") its name in 1702, and from 1944 to 1992 the town was called Petrokrepost.

        • The fortress was founded by the Novgorodians in 1323, and the Treaty of Orekhovets with the Swedes was signed here the same year.
        • The present walls and towers were built in 1514–1525; of the ten towers, six survive.
        • The walls rise up to 12 metres, are 4.5 metres thick at the base, and are about 740 metres long in total.
        • For almost 90 years, from 1612 to 1702, the fortress was the Swedish Nöteborg.
        • The first famous prisoner was Peter I's sister Maria Alekseyevna, and in 1725 his first wife Evdokia Lopukhina was held here.
        • In 1887 Alexander Ulyanov, Lenin's elder brother, was executed here.
        • A memorial to the defenders of 1941–1943 was opened in the fortress courtyard on 9 May 1985.
        • The asteroid (8982) Oreshek is named after the fortress.
