        • The garden grew out of Peter I's Apothecary Garden, already mentioned in the 1713 census; the documents on its founding burned in 1737.
        • Under Catherine II “Tungus tea” was grown here — meadowsweet, thought to be a sweat-inducing remedy for colds.
        • The garden received Peter the Great's name in 1913, for its 200th anniversary.
        • The greenhouse complex has 28 greenhouses with a total area of about 1 ha, and the route through them is about a kilometre long.
        • Two greenhouse quadrangles were built in 1823–1826 so that they can be walked round without going outdoors.
        • During the siege 50 incendiary bombs and 85 shells hit the greenhouses.
        • The Botanical Museum, founded in 1823, holds over 80,000 specimens.

        • According to legend, the island got its name from a huge stone that stuck out of the Neva by its south shore.
        • In 1765 Catherine II gave the island to Tsarevich Paul; the palace for him was built by Yury Felten.
        • In the Church of the Forerunner Kutuzov prayed for victory, and the Pushkins christened their children Natasha and Grisha.
        • The summer Kamennoostrovsky Theatre, designed by S. L. Shustov, was built in just 40 days.
        • Under Nicholas II the industrialist Putilov, the merchant Eliseev and Professor Bekhterev built dachas here.
