        • The building was built in 1819–1829 to a design by Carlo Rossi; until 1917 it housed the Army General Staff, the Foreign Ministry and the Finance Ministry.
        • The arch is crowned by Victory in a chariot drawn by six horses — the work of the sculptors Stepan Pimenov and Vasily Demut-Malinovsky.
        • To lighten the chariot, the figures were hammered out of copper over a cast-iron frame — making the sculptural group five times lighter.
        • On 30 August 1918 the chairman of the Petrograd Cheka, Moisei Uritsky, was killed in the entrance of the east building.
        • The east wing was transferred to the Hermitage in 1999, and its full reconstruction was finished in 2013.
        • The wing fully opened on 28 June 2014 with the Manifesta 10 biennial — Matisse's "Dance" and "Music" were moved here at the same time.

        • The sphinxes were made under the pharaoh Amenhotep III for his mortuary temple in Thebes; in 1825 they were found by the antiquities hunter Giovanni d'Athanasi.
        • Each sphinx, of pink Aswan granite, weighs 23 tonnes and is 5.24 m long.
        • Buying them was proposed by the traveller Andrey Muravyov, who had seen a sphinx in Alexandria in 1830.
        • The sphinxes had already been sold to France, but the July Revolution wrecked the deal — and Russia bought them for 64,000 rubles.
        • While being loaded onto the ship ‘Buena Esperanza’, one sphinx fell and damaged the headcloth.
        • The sphinxes arrived in May 1832, but for two years stood in the courtyard of the Academy of Arts while Konstantin Thon finished the landing stage.

        • The museum officially opened on 30 September 2010, having welcomed its first visitors back on 20 May.
        • The name stands for “era of art” — “Era” plus “Art”.
        • The building dates from 1951 in the Stalinist neoclassical style; in Soviet times it housed a district party committee, then a synthetic rubber institute.
        • The entrance is guarded by the sculptures of Era and Art by Dmitry Zhukov, made on the museum's commission.
        • The collection has over 2,800 works by more than 300 artists, from the 1950s to the present day.

        • The island appeared in 1719, when the Kryukov and Admiralty canals were dug for shipbuilders; its area is 7.8 ha.
        • The name comes from the warehouses of ship timber, which was dried the Dutch way — standing upright.
        • Vallin de la Mothe's arch over the canal to the inner basin was built in 1779–1787; it is 23 metres high.
        • The round naval prison building from the 1820s was nicknamed the “bottle” — it is said to be the origin of the Russian idiom for flying off the handle.
        • In the 1894 experimental basin, the shipbuilder Alexey Krylov carried out experiments on ship unsinkability.
        • During the First World War the most powerful radio station in Russia, belonging to the naval staff, worked here.
        • Until December 2004 the island was occupied by Baltic Fleet services, and it was closed to the public.
