The fortress, Kronverk ducks and a playground

      ⏱ 3 h 20 min🚶 1.5 km🍽 1📍 4 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

Petrogradka for a toddler: a flat beach and lawns by the fortress walls, ducks in the Kronverk Strait, a playground in Alexandrovsky Park and lunch with a big play area.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture🌳 Parks and nature
      👶 under 3, 3–6 years · ✓ stroller-friendly

Gorkovskaya has no lift — come by taxi or by tram 6/40 to the Ioannovsky Bridge. The bridge is flat; inside the fortress there are cobbles in places — stick to the paved passages along the walls.

        🏛 Peter and Paul Fortress
🎟 partly ticketed · The grounds are free; the cathedral and museums are ticketed
The noon cannon shot — at 12:00
Easier to get here by taxi. Entry to the grounds is free. Go through the Ioannovsky Gate to the beach by the Neva Wall: space, gulls and wind — toddlers love it. Toilets are by the Ioannovsky Ravelin.

        • The fortress was founded on 16 (27) May 1703 — this day is considered the founding day of Petersburg.
        • The fortress never took part in military action.
        • From 1706 the earthen ramparts began to be replaced with brick ones; the bastions are named after Peter's associates — Menshikov, Naryshkin, Trubetskoy.
        • The Peter and Paul Cathedral was built in 1712–1733 to a design by Trezzini; the bell tower is 122.5 m high, and inside is the Romanov burial vault.
        • The Peter Gate is dedicated to the victories over Sweden; Trezzini designed its Baroque facade in 1708.
        • Until the early 1920s the Trubetskoy Bastion held a prison for political prisoners; Maxim Gorky was held there in 1905.
        • In 1991 a monument to Peter I by Mikhail Shemyakin was placed on the central alley.

        🌳 Kronverkskaya Embankment
        Кронверкская наб. (вдоль Кронверкского протока)
A quiet embankment between the Peter and Paul Fortress and Alexandrovsky Park: smooth asphalt, water and ducks in the channel.
Back across the Kronverksky Bridge and along the strait: people feed ducks here, and the smooth asphalt and quiet make it a good time for a stroller nap.

        • The through road along the Kronverk Strait opened only in 1978.
        • The embankment received its name on 29 December 1980; before that it was nameless.
        • From the embankment you can see the Kronverk with the Military History Museum of Artillery and the obelisk at the site of the Decembrists' execution.

        🌳 Alexandrovsky Park
A shady park by the Peter and Paul Fortress with paths, home to the zoo, the planetarium and the Music Hall.
The playgrounds are by Velikan Park, on the Kronverksky Prospekt side, with step-free access; almost empty on weekday mornings. Benches in the shade of linden trees.

        • The park was laid out on the glacis of the Peter and Paul Fortress on the initiative of Finance Minister Yegor Kankrin; the project was approved in 1842.
        • The park is named in memory of Alexander I; the first public festivities here took place on Alexander's Day, 30 August 1845.
        • The People's House was built in 1898–1900 on the basis of a pavilion from the Nizhny Novgorod Exhibition — now it houses the Music Hall and the planetarium.
        • In 1911 a monument to the destroyer ‘Steregushchy’ was unveiled in the park.
        • From 1923 the park bore Lenin's name — he spoke twice in the People's House.
        • Gorkovskaya metro station opened right in the park in 1963.
