      🏛 “Philosophers' Ship” Memorial Sign

      наб. Лейтенанта Шмидта

A marker by the Neva commemorating the expulsion of scholars and philosophers in 1922: the ships left for Germany from this embankment.

      • The sign was installed in 2003.
      • In autumn 1922 the steamships Oberbürgermeister Haken and Preussen took the exiled scholars and philosophers from Petrograd to Stettin.
      • The exiles were allowed one winter and one summer coat and a couple of sets of underwear each; gold and valuables were forbidden.
      • The name “Philosophers' Ship” was coined by the philosopher Sergey Khoruzhy in 1990.
