      🏛 Sampsonievsky Cathedral

      Санкт-Петербург, Большой Сампсониевский пр., 41

One of the oldest churches in the city (1728–1740), built in memory of the Poltava victory; next to it is the quiet Sampsonievsky Garden.

      • In 1710 a wooden Church of St Sampson the Hospitable was consecrated here — the Poltava victory was won on his day.
      • The first architects of the city — Domenico Trezzini, Andreas Schlüter and Le Blond — are buried in the churchyard.
      • Volynsky, Khrushchov and the architect Yeropkin, executed in 1740, lie within the fence; their 1885 monument has an epitaph by Ryleyev.
      • In 1820 Israel Blank, Lenin's maternal grandfather, was baptised here and given the name Alexander.
      • The cathedral architect's name is unknown: Pietro and Giuseppe Trezzini or Mikhail Zemtsov are named.
      • The cathedral opened as a museum in 2000, and in 2017 it was handed to the Church.
