The Strelka with a stroller: the cathedral and the pakgauzy

      ⏱ 1 h 30 min🚶 2 km🍽 1📍 4 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

An hour and a half on the flat spit where the Oka flows into the Volga: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, open space by the water, the openwork pavilions of the 1896 exhibition and hot chocolate at the coffee shop by the cathedral.

      👶 under 3, 3–6 years · ✓ stroller-friendly

From Strelka metro to the cathedral is about 15 minutes along flat sidewalks past the stadium, and the spit has wide paths without steps. It's always windy here — bring a cover for the stroller.

        • The cathedral was built in 1868–1881 to a design by the architect Lev Dal.
        • The fair's merchants decided to build the church in memory of Alexander II's visit to the fair.
        • Over ten years 454,667 rubles in donations were collected for the construction.
        • In the late 1930s the cathedral began to be dismantled: a giant monument-lighthouse was planned in its place.
        • Since 2009 it has been the cathedral of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese.

        🌳 The Strelka
        Стрелка
The spit where the Oka flows into the Volga: an embankment right by the water, lawns by the stadium, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and a view of the kremlin across the river.
The very tip: the Volga on the left, the Oka on the right, the kremlin on its hill opposite. Plenty of space for a little one to run around.

        • In 1896, for the All-Russian Exhibition, the first tram was run here, linking the city with the fair.
        • In Soviet times a cargo port operated on the Strelka, and it was long impossible to get in.
        • In 2015–2018 a stadium for the FIFA World Cup was built on the Strelka.

        • In 1896 they were used again at the All-Russian Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod.
