        • Semyonov arose in the early 17th century as an Old Believer settlement and was first mentioned in 1644.
        • It became a town in 1779, a district center of the Nizhny Novgorod Viceroyalty.
        • In the 18th–19th centuries Semyonov was a center of Old Belief: people hid from persecution in the forests beyond the Volga.

        • The Khokhloma craft arose in the second half of the 17th century around Semyonov and the villages of Khokhloma and Skorobogatovskoye.
        • Turned spoon blanks (baklushi) and "chip" wares for painting were brought to Semyonov from the surrounding villages.
        • In 1916 the mayor of Nizhny Novgorod, Dmitry Sirotkin, opened a school of artistic woodworking here with his own money.
