      🚶 Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment

      Верхне-Волжская наб.

A boulevard-embankment on a high bluff: 19th and early 20th-century mansions on one side, the Volga and the forests beyond it on the other.

      • The embankment is 1.75 km long, from Minin Square to Sennaya Square.
      • Before the revolution it was called Georgievskaya, and in Soviet times the Zhdanov Embankment.
      • The embankment was laid out on the will of Nicholas I: in 1834 he disliked the shacks and rubbish on the slope.
      • In 1858 Alexandre Dumas stayed in one of its houses, having come for the Nizhny Novgorod Fair.
      • No. 1 was built in 1913–1916 for the board of the Volga steamship company.
