🏛 St Nicholas Church of the Intercession Monastery

      пер. Тюленина, 5, Балахна

A tent-roofed church of 1552 — the same age as the capture of Kazan and one of the oldest stone churches in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      • The stone tent-roofed church was built in 1552 by order of Ivan the Terrible in honor of the capture of Kazan.
      • It was part of the Intercession Monastery, founded in the first half of the 16th century by the hieromonk Pafnuty.
      • The monastery was abolished in 1783 — it had grown poor after the decline of the salt trade.
      • The church was returned to believers in 2008, and in 2011 the relics of the monastery's founder, Pafnuty, were found here.
