      A museum about Kuzma Minin and the Time of Troubles, in the town considered the birthplace of the militia's hero.

      • Balakhna is the supposed birthplace of Kuzma Minin, organizer of the 1611–1612 militia.
      • The name Balakhna first appears in documents of 1536 — that year is considered the year of its founding.
      • In the Middle Ages the town was a major center of the salt trade.
