      🏛 Resurrection Cathedral in Arzamas

A huge Neoclassical cathedral at the top of the hill, built to mark the victory of 1812 — you can see it from anywhere in the town.

      • The cathedral was built in gratitude for the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812; the main altar was consecrated in 1840.
      • The construction used 5.5 million bricks, 1,000 cubic meters of rubble stone and 164 tons of iron.
      • In 1926 the restorer Nikolai Pomerantsev compared the cathedral only with Stasov's St Petersburg cathedrals.
      • In 1932 the church was closed and turned into a museum of atheism; services returned in 1947.
      • Today it is the second cathedral of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese.
