      • The museum opened on 25 June (7 July) 1896 — one of the first public museums in the Russian provinces.
      • Among the first visitors in July 1896 were Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna.
      • The military governor's house was built in 1837–1841 on a spot chosen by Nicholas I himself.
      • Konstantin Makovsky's "Minin's Appeal to the People of Nizhny Novgorod" is the museum's largest canvas; a separate pavilion was built for it in 1968.
      • After 1917 the collection was enlarged by the holdings of the Sheremetevs, Orlov-Davydovs and Abamelek-Lazarevs.
