        • Around 1158 Andrey Bogolyubsky founded a country residence here, the white-stone “stone town” of Bogolyubovo.
        • The castle's remains are the only civil building of pre-Mongol Rus to survive even in part.
        • The supposed site of Prince Andrey's murder, under the stairs of the staircase tower, survives to this day.
        • The castle was considered lost until in 1954 Nikolay Voronin identified the staircase tower and the passage to the cathedral's choir gallery.
        • The ancient Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God collapsed in 1722; the present one was built in 1751–1758.
        • In the 18th century a tent-roofed bell tower was built on top of the staircase tower.
        • The monastery was closed on 3 June 1923.

🏛 Church of the Intercession on the Nerl
Владимирская обл., пос. Боголюбово, ул. Ленина, 1Б
A 12th-century white-stone church (traditionally dated to 1165) in the middle of a floodplain meadow, a UNESCO site and one of the best-known churches in Russia.
A wide dirt road across the meadow — 1.5 km, about 20 minutes; you can usually go inside from 10:00. The meadow floods in spring and is dry in October, but waterproof shoes are best

        • The church stands on a man-made hill about 3 m high: the foundation together with the buried walls goes more than 5 m into the ground, as flood protection.
        • The building date is disputed: Voronin gave 1165, Dobrokhotov 1166, and Zagrayevsky and Timofeeva 1158.
        • According to legend the white stone was brought from conquered Volga Bulgaria, but petrographic analyses disprove this.
        • Until the 1850s even historians did not know about the church: it was not included in the album of ancient churches compiled in 1834 for Konstantin Thon.
        • The original frescoes were knocked off in the renovation of 1877.
        • In the late 1980s restorers removed the convex roof of the early 19th century.
        • Igor Grabar called the church “the most perfect temple created in Rus”.

        • The gate was built in 1164 under Andrey Bogolyubsky, who moved the principality's capital from Suzdal to Vladimir.
        • It is named for its sheets of gilded copper: according to the Hypatian Chronicle, the prince "made" it with gold.
        • Of the city's five 12th-century entrance gates, only the Golden Gate has survived to this day.
        • In February 1238 Batu's army could not break through the gate and entered the city through a gap in the wooden wall next to it.
        • Nearby stands the Kozlov Rampart, about 6 meters high, a remnant of the ancient fortifications.
        • On 20 August 1983 a capsule with a message to the people of Vladimir in the 21st century was placed in a niche of one of the corner towers.
        • The gate church holds a military-history exhibition with a diorama of the 1238 assault on Vladimir.

        • Today more than a hundred species of fruit trees and other plants grow here, the main one being cherry.
        • Legend has it that Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky brought the cherry saplings to Vladimir.

        • In summer 1964 a scene from the film "Balzaminov's Marriage" was shot by the Old Pharmacy.

        • The first cathedral was built under Andrey Bogolyubsky in 1158–1160 and painted as early as 1161.
        • After the fire of 1185, Vsevolod the Big Nest surrounded the church with galleries, so the old cathedral ended up inside the new one.
        • The cathedral served as the model for the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin.
        • The cathedral's builders, Andrey Bogolyubsky and his brother Vsevolod the Big Nest, are buried in the north gallery.
        • In 1238 the grand prince's family locked themselves in the cathedral; the Mongols set it on fire and everyone inside perished.
        • The 1408 frescoes by Rublev and Daniil Chorny were hidden under plaster for a long time and were uncovered during the restoration of 1882–1884.
        • In 1767 Catherine II allocated 14,000 rubles to renovate the cathedral; the ancient iconostasis was then replaced with a new one.

        • Vsevolod the Big Nest dedicated the cathedral to his patron saint: at baptism the prince was named Dmitry.
        • The walls are decorated with about 600 reliefs, which is why the cathedral is called a "white-stone book".
        • The south facade shows "The Ascension of Alexander the Great to Heaven", a subject rare for a church.
        • The cathedral was the prince's house church and was connected to his palace by galleries.
        • During the 1837–1839 "restoration" ordered by Nicholas I, the galleries and stair towers were torn down as supposed later additions.
        • Oak tie-beams about 20 cm thick are set inside the walls.
        • In 2011 the first liturgy in many decades was held here, but the cathedral remains part of the museum.
