Start with a late breakfast: the food hall on the ground-below level of Detsky Mir opens at 10:00. After eating, go up to the Detsky Mir atrium to see the huge clock mechanism — it’s free.
🍴 A 35-stall food hall on the ground floor of Detsky Mir, opened in spring 2026: families have lunch here in the daytime, and there are concerts in the evening. What to order: pasta or pizza at Pasta Pizza, ramen at Thai Food, chocolate-covered strawberries at ChokoBerry.

        🚶 Tretyakovsky Proyezd
между Никольской улицей и Театральным проездом
A short pedestrian passage behind a gate-arch in the style of an old fortress wall — from Teatralny Proyezd to Nikolskaya, with the shop windows of fashion houses.
Three minutes along the street: walk under the fortress-gate arch into the passage and come back out to Teatralny — then on to Petrovka.

        • The passage was cut through in the 1870s by the brothers Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov, founders of the Tretyakov Gallery, to shorten the way from Nikolskaya to Teatralnaya Square.
        • The gate in the style of the Kitay-gorod fortress wall was built by the architect Alexander Kaminsky, the Tretyakovs' son-in-law.
        • The passage was private: it was opened by day and locked at night.
        • Since the 2000s it has housed boutiques of the most expensive brands, and the passage itself became pedestrian.

        🏛 Petrovsky Passage

A long covered gallery of 1906 between Petrovka and Neglinnaya: enter from Petrovka, walk under the glass roof to Neglinnaya and back — you can wait out a downpour that way too.

        • The passage was built by the merchant's wife Vera Firsanova, owner of the Sandunovsky Baths and the Serednikovo estate.
        • The design was by Sergei Kalugin and Boris Freudenberg, who also designed the Sandunovsky Baths.
        • The passage opened on 20 February 1906 and had more than fifty shopping pavilions.
        • The glass vaults are often attributed to Shukhov, but that is an urban legend: the structures were made by the Arthur Koppel firm.
        • Electricity for the passage's illumination came from a power station in the same Sandunovsky Baths.
        • In the 1930s Dirizhablestroy (the airship construction bureau) worked here, where the Italian designer Umberto Nobile served in 1931–1936.
        • The passage's auction hall is described in Ilf and Petrov's "The Twelve Chairs".

        • Inside, the Neoclassical ceiling paintings, the grand staircase and the orchestra niche in the ballroom survive.
        • The collection includes Malevich, Chagall, Goncharova, Larionov, Kandinsky and a large collection of Niko Pirosmani.
