        🖼 Borodino Battle Panorama Museum
        Кутузовский пр-т, 38
        🎟 ticket
A round building of 1962 with a huge panorama and a foreground display about the battle of 1812.
Start with the panorama: the museum is closed on Fridays. Listen to the tour — without the story it’s hard for kids to find Kutuzov and Bagration on the canvas and to see where the canvas ends and the foreground begins.

        • Franz Roubaud painted the panorama in Munich in 1911–1912 for the battle's 100th anniversary; the canvas measures 15 by 115 m.
        • The panorama was first shown in 1912 in a wooden pavilion on Chistye Prudy; Nicholas II attended the opening.
        • Then the canvas lay rolled up in storage for years, and of 1,725 m² about 900 m² was lost.
        • The museum on Kutuzovsky opened on 18 October 1962, for the 150th anniversary of the victory.
        • In 1967 a fire destroyed about 60% of the panorama; the lost parts were restored by artists of the Grekov Studio.
        • The museum stands on the site of the village of Fili, where in 1812 Kutuzov decided at a council of war to abandon Moscow.
        • The monument to Kutuzov at the entrance was put up in 1973.

🍴 A 24-hour chain coffee shop on Kutuzovsky Prospekt, between the Victory Museum and the Borodino Panorama — a handy stop with kids. What to order: blini, syrniki (cottage-cheese pancakes), hot chocolate.

        • The chain grew out of the Moscow café Shokoladnitsa by Oktyabrskaya metro, opened in 1964.
        • For several decades this café was almost the only place in the capital serving hot chocolate and blini with chocolate, raisins and nuts.
        • The café was relaunched in 2000, and from 2006 the chain began opening in other cities.
        • The Victory Square coffee shop is open round the clock.

        • Six dioramas are devoted to the main battles of the war — from the Battle of Moscow to the storming of Berlin.
        • In the Hall of Glory, the names of more than 11,000 Heroes of the Soviet Union are carved in white marble.
        • In the Hall of Memory and Sorrow, thousands of glass "tear" pendants hang from the ceiling.
        • Outside the museum is an open-air display of military equipment.
