A rainy evening: GUM and the lights of Nikolskaya

      ⏱ 3 h🚶 1 km🍽 3📍 4 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

An evening by Red Square almost without going outdoors: the lines of GUM under glass vaults, a Soviet-style dinner, a Guinness on Nikolskaya and fruit liqueurs on Ilyinka.

        🏛 GUM
Late-19th-century trading rows under glass vaults, with openwork bridges over three arcades.
From Ploshchad Revolyutsii metro it’s 3 minutes to the entrance from Red Square. GUM is open until 22:00: walk the first line to the fountain and go up to the second-floor bridges — from above you see all three glass-roofed arcades.

        • The Upper Trading Rows building was built in 1890–1893 to a design by Alexander Pomerantsev, and trading began on 2 December 1893.
        • The glass vaults over the arcades were made by the St Petersburg Metal Works using engineer Otto Krell's system; Shukhov's involvement is an urban legend.
        • The name "State Universal Store" appeared in 1921.
        • From the early 1930s the building housed people's commissariats and offices, and it became the GUM store again only in December 1953.
        • The fountain in the middle of the first line is a long-time meeting place: Muscovites have been saying "meet me at the fountain in GUM" for generations.
        • Since 2006 a skating rink has been flooded in winter by the GUM walls on Red Square.

Without leaving GUM, go to the 3rd line: everything is at the serving counter — herring under a fur coat, cutlets, compote. It’s open until 22:00, like GUM itself, so have dinner first.
🍴 A Soviet-style canteen on the third line of GUM: everything is on the serving counter, and cutlets and fish are sold by weight. What to order: herring under a fur coat, olivier salad, cutlets, pastries with kompot.

Leave GUM onto Nikolskaya and it’s 4 minutes to No. 10 — a pub on the second floor of Nikolskaya Plaza. Irish beer and wings; on weekends towards evening better to book.
🍴 An Irish pub a couple of steps from Red Square, with craft beer and whiskey. Try: Guinness or stout, BBQ wings, ribs, pork knuckle.

Through Bogoyavlensky Lane to Ilyinka, 5 minutes: a lively rummery bar with house-made liqueurs, open until late at night.
🍴 A noisy rumochnaya-pub (shot bar) by Gostiny Dvor, open until late at night. Try: signature liqueurs, pork ribs, snacks to go with liqueurs.
