      The centre in the rain

      ⏱ 4 h🚶 1.8 km🍽 3📍 6 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

Almost all under cover: the Historical Museum, the GUM arcades and Zaryadye's underground media centre.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture☔️ If it rains
      👶 7–12, 13+ years · ✓ stroller-friendly

GUM and Zaryadye have lifts; the Historical Museum lets strollers into all halls except Hall 36, and has a lift — ask the administrator, as the attendants don't always let you use the lift on your own. The lower level of the Media Centre is reached by stairs, with no lift. "Flight over Moscow" requires a height of 120 cm and isn't recommended for children under 6.

        • The building was constructed in 1875–1883 to a design by the architect Vladimir Sherwood and the engineer Anatoly Semyonov; the old Main Pharmacy building was demolished for it.
        • In 1755 the first Russian university, Moscow University, opened on this spot, in the former town hall building.
        • The museum opened to the public on 2 June 1883, when only a few rooms on the first floor were ready.
        • Viktor Vasnetsov, Valentin Serov, Ivan Aivazovsky and Ilya Repin worked on the decoration of the halls.
        • Exhibit No. 1 in the inventory book is a twisted bronze bracelet from the Caucasian village of Koban, donated by Count Uvarov in 1881.
        • The gilded lions and unicorns on the tower spires were removed in 1935 and returned only in December 2003.
        • The collections hold more than 5 million items, and the permanent exhibition on Red Square shows only about 0.5% of them.

The restaurant is about 300 m from the Historical Museum, entrance from Manezhnaya Square. The children's room is open all day, but there isn't always an entertainer, so it's best to check by phone. On a rainy day it's convenient to have lunch here right after the museum.
🍴 A large Novikov Group restaurant a couple of steps from Red Square. There is a kids' play room, and entertainers run workshops, but not all day, so check the times. Try: pelmeni, vareniki, pasta or khachapuri.

        • The glass vaults over the arcades were made by the St Petersburg Metal Works using engineer Otto Krell's system; Shukhov's involvement is an urban legend.
        • The name "State Universal Store" appeared in 1921.
        • From the early 1930s the building housed people's commissariats and offices, and it became the GUM store again only in December 1953.
        • The fountain in the middle of the first line is a long-time meeting place: Muscovites have been saying "meet me at the fountain in GUM" for generations.
        • Since 2006 a skating rink has been flooded in winter by the GUM walls on Red Square.
