Troparyovo: a church by the pond and a forest park

      ⏱ 4 h🚶 5.1 km🍽 2📍 5 stops
      🚶 Moderate — 3–7 km

All that remains of the village of Troparyovo is a late-17th-century church and the pond below it, and beyond Vernadsky Prospekt begins a real forest with an eco-trail.

👶 With kids🏛 History and architecture🌳 Parks and nature🏘 Off the centre
      👶 3–6, 7–12 years · ✓ stroller-friendly

You can get around the pond and along the avenue. The eco-trail in the forest park is dirt, and in wet weather only an all-terrain stroller will cope. Troparyovo metro has a lift; Yugo-Zapadnaya doesn't.

        • The stone church was completed by 1694 with funds from the Novodevichy Convent, which owned the village; the architect's name is unknown.
        • Judging by its architecture, the bell tower is older than the church itself: it is dated to the mid-17th century and the Moscow uzorochye (ornate) style.
        • The church was closed in 1939, and in the 1960s it stored Mosfilm sets.
        • The consecration on 23 February 1989 was the first consecration of a church reopened after the persecutions in Moscow.
        • Parishioners hid one old bell; until 1989 it was kept in the Theatre on Yugo-Zapad opposite the church.
        • The church flashes by in "The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!" (1975) and in the Italian film "Sunflower" (1970).

        • The name Troparyovo comes from the nickname of the boyar Ivan Mikhailovich — Troparyo: he sang church troparia well.
        • In 1583 Ivan the Terrible gave the village of Troparyovo to the Novodevichy Convent.

        • The Troparyovsky landscape reserve covers 218.7 hectares.
        • The park was laid out in 1961 on the site of monastery orchards and named in honor of the 22nd Congress of the Communist Party.
        • Six alleys radiate from the round central square with its commemorative oaks: birch, larch, poplar, apple, maple and linden.
        • More than 40,000 trees were planted when the park was created.
        • In 2007 an "Apothecary Garden" with about 50 species of medicinal plants was planted near the central circle.
        • 376 species of herbaceous plants have been counted here, 33 of them in Moscow's Red Book.
