The first Khrushchyovkas and the courtyards of Block 9

      ⏱ 1 h 20 min🚶 2.7 km🍽 1📍 3 stops
      🐢 A little — under 3 km

The green courtyards of the experimental block that began Moscow's mass housing — built as a little town with a school and a kindergarten. Then pie with coffee and a quiet park-boulevard.

The whole route is on pavements and in parks. Akademicheskaya on the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya line has no lift (there is one at the station of the same name on the Troitskaya line) — better to take a bus to the start. The Darwin Museum has ramps and lifts to all floors.

🚶 The first khrushchyovka and the 9th experimental block
        ул. Гримау, 14–16
A late-1950s block where the first prefab panel five-story buildings were tried out: building No. 16 is considered Moscow's first khrushchyovka.
House No. 16 is considered the first Moscow khrushchyovka (Khrushchev-era apartment block), and next to it No. 14 is the K-7 series. Walk through the green courtyards: the block was built as a little town with a school, kindergarten and shops.

        • Buildings No. 14 and 16 belong to the experimental 9th block of Novye Cheryomushki, built in 1956–1959.
        • The block's project was led by the young architect Natan Osterman.
        • Exhibitions were held right in the apartments of the new buildings — by 1959 more than 40,000 people had visited them.
        • A few apartments got a "polibán" — a bathtub, shower, sink, bidet and laundry tank in a single fixture; the experiment was judged a failure.
        • Through traffic was excluded from the block, and each courtyard got shallow splash pools for children.
        • Until 1963 the street was called 2nd Cheryomushkinsky Proyezd; the new name honors the Spanish communist Julián Grimau.
        • The lives of the Cheryomushki newcomers were satirized in Shostakovich's operetta "Moscow, Cheryomushki", first staged in January 1959.
        • In 2008 Moscow historians asked for the block to be recognized as a monument but were refused: the buildings were judged to be mass-produced.

        • The park was laid out in 2017 on the site of the Zhilishchnik bus depots; its area is 16.5 hectares.
        • The terrain has two levels, with artificial hills; the main square has a semicircular pergola, and 11 more are scattered around the park.
        • Large figures of prehistoric animals stand at the main entrance, including an olorotitan and the predatory invantosaurus.
        • The climbing frames on one of the playgrounds are shaped like chemical elements.
