Cheryomushki: the first Khrushchyovkas and mammoths

      ⏱ 4 h 30 min🚶 5.4 km🍽 4📍 8 stops
      🚶 Moderate — 3–7 km

In the late 1950s the country's first prefabricated five-storey blocks were tried out here — the Grimau Street quarter still looks like an experimental town. Nearby are the Darwin Museum and Cheryomushki Market.

The whole route is on pavements and in parks. Akademicheskaya on the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya line has no lift (the station of the same name on the Troitskaya line does), so it's better to reach the start by bus. The Darwin Museum has ramps and lifts to all floors.

        🏛 Ho Chi Minh Monument
        площадь Хо Ши Мина (у м. «Академическая»)
A 1990 monument: a figure of the Vietnamese leader against a large disc with a relief, on a high pedestal.
Start — Akademicheskaya metro, exit to Ho Chi Minh Square. The monument to the Vietnamese leader is a rarity in Moscow.
        📖 More about the placeCollapse
        • The monument was unveiled on 18 May 1990, on the eve of Ho Chi Minh's birthday.
        • The authors are the sculptor Vladimir Tsigal and the architect Rudolf Kananin; Tsigal received the Vietnamese Order of Friendship for the work.
        • In front of the sun disc is a figure of a Vietnamese man rising from his knees, and on the back there are tropical flowers and bamboo.
        • The pedestal bears Ho Chi Minh's words: "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom."
        • Because of its shape the monument was jokingly nicknamed the "flying saucer monument".
        • The square was named after Ho Chi Minh in 1969 — 21 years before the monument.
        • Vietnamese wedding motorcades often come here.

🚶 The first khrushchyovka and the 9th experimental block
        ул. Гримау, 14–16
A late-1950s block where the first prefab panel five-story buildings were tried out: building No. 16 is considered Moscow's first khrushchyovka.
Building No. 16 is considered Moscow's first khrushchyovka, with No. 14 next to it from the K-7 series. Walk through the green courtyards: the quarter was built as a little town with a school, kindergarten and shops.

        • Buildings No. 14 and 16 belong to the experimental 9th block of Novye Cheryomushki, built in 1956–1959.
        • The block's project was led by the young architect Natan Osterman.
        • Exhibitions were held right in the apartments of the new buildings — by 1959 more than 40,000 people had visited them.
        • A few apartments got a "polibán" — a bathtub, shower, sink, bidet and laundry tank in a single fixture; the experiment was judged a failure.
        • Through traffic was excluded from the block, and each courtyard got shallow splash pools for children.
        • Until 1963 the street was called 2nd Cheryomushkinsky Proyezd; the new name honors the Spanish communist Julián Grimau.
        • The lives of the Cheryomushki newcomers were satirized in Shostakovich's operetta "Moscow, Cheryomushki", first staged in January 1959.
        • In 2008 Moscow historians asked for the block to be recognized as a monument but were refused: the buildings were judged to be mass-produced.
